хай сабе

Let It Be with Хай Сабе

Level 6Sounds Like haj sabe

Хай сабе means let it be or so what: Хай сабе ідзе дождж, мы ўсё роўна пойдзем. (Let it rain, we will go anyway.)

How It Works

Хай сабе and няхай сабе are the same phrase; хай is the shorter, more everyday form of няхай. It says let it be so: the speaker accepts a fact and shows it does not matter.

Granting a fact. The next clause says what happens anyway, often with усё роўна (anyway) or затое (but then): Хай сабе ідзе дождж, мы ўсё роўна пойдзем.

Letting others be. With a third-person verb it means let them, without caring: Хай сабе смяюцца. (Let them laugh.)

As a reply. On its own or after ну і it answers fine, so be it: — Ён не прыйдзе. — Ну і хай сабе.

About сабе. In this phrase сабе is an unstressed particle that adds calm indifference. It is not the dative of сябе meaning for oneself, so it never changes to сябе or сабой.

Because it sounds indifferent, хай сабе does not fit warm wishes. For good luck or let him come, use plain хай or няхай. For a neutral although, use хоць.

Register. Dictionaries mark хай and this particle сабе as conversational. Хай сабе is at home in speech, letters and dialogue in stories. In formal writing, use хоць or нягледзячы на.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the form сябе instead of the particle сабе.

    Хай сябе ідзе дождж.
    Хай сабе ідзе дождж.

The fixed phrase is always хай сабе. Сябе is the accusative and genitive of the reflexive pronoun and does not belong here.

  • Borrowing the Russian word for let.

    Ну і пусць.
    Ну і хай сабе.

Belarusian says хай or няхай. Пусць copies Russian пусть and is not standard Belarusian.

  • Using хай сабе for a friendly wish.

    Хай сабе табе шанцуе!
    Хай табе шанцуе!

The intended meaning is a warm wish (good luck to you). Хай сабе adds a shrug of indifference, which does not fit a wish.
