Ethical Dative
Вось табе і навіна! Here табе is not a receiver. It just adds surprise: Well, there's news for you!
How It Works
Usually the dative names someone who receives something: Я даю кнігу брату. The ethical dative is different. It is a short pronoun, usually мне, табе or вам, that names no real receiver. It only adds emotion.
Мне: the speaker is involved. In warnings and commands, мне means roughly I am telling you or for my sake:
- Ты мне глядзі! You watch yourself, I'm telling you!
- Не хадзі мне туды ноччу! Don't you go there at night!
Табе and вам: pulling the listener in. In exclamations and stories, табе or вам makes the listener share the surprise:
- Вось табе і навіна! Well, there's news for you!
- Вось вам і лета! So much for summer!
- А ён табе як закрычыць! And all of a sudden he starts shouting!
How to recognise it. The pronoun is unstressed and can be removed without changing the facts: Ты глядзі! means the same thing, only with less feeling. It never becomes a full noun: you cannot replace табе with брату.
Keep the dative. The accusative changes the meaning completely: Ты мяне глядзі would mean look after me, because глядзець каго means to look after someone.
Register. The ethical dative belongs to conversation, folk speech and fiction that imitates it. Leave it out of formal writing.

The perfective як закрычыць describes a sudden action in a story; табе draws the listener in.
Common Mistakes
Using the accusative instead of the dative.
Ты мяне глядзі!Ты мне глядзі!The intended meaning is a warning: You watch yourself! With the accusative мяне, глядзі gets a real object and means Look after me. The ethical dative uses a dative pronoun such as мне, табе or вам.
Changing the fixed exclamation to another case.
Вось цябе і навіна!Вось табе і навіна!The formula is вось табе і or вось вам і, always with the dative.
