Verbs Taking the Dative

Level 3Sounds Like dzeâslovy z davalʹnym

Some verbs take their object in the dative (каму?): Я дапамагаю маме (I help Mom), Патэлефануй мне (Call me).

How It Works

1. The pattern. Some verbs name the person or thing they are aimed at in the dative, answering каму? or чаму? (see dative endings):

  • дапамагаць маме (to help Mom)
  • тэлефанаваць сябру (to call a friend)
  • верыць людзям (to trust people)
  • радавацца сонцу (to be glad of the sun)

2. Common verbs. дапамагаць / дапамагчы (help), тэлефанаваць / патэлефанаваць (call), верыць (believe, trust), радавацца (be glad about), зайздросціць (envy), раіць (advise), абяцаць (promise), адказваць (answer), шкодзіць (harm).

3. Thanking and forgiving. Belarusian puts the person you thank or forgive in the dative, where Russian uses the accusative: Дзякую вам (Thank you), Прабачце мне (Forgive me), Даруй мне (Forgive me). See дзякаваць and apologizing.

4. Верыць каму and верыць у. Верыць + dative means to believe or trust a person: Я веру табе. Верыць у + accusative means to believe in something: верыць у сябе (to believe in yourself).

5. Pronouns. The dative pronouns are мне, табе, яму, ёй, нам, вам, ім. Formal verbs such as спрыяць and перашкаджаць follow the same pattern (see formal dative verbs).

  • Using the accusative after прабачаць, as in Russian.

In Belarusian you forgive каму, so the pronoun is the dative мне.
