Running, Flying and Swimming Pairs
Three more motion pairs work like ісці and хадзіць: бегчы / бегаць (run), ляцець / лятаць (fly), плыць / плаваць (swim, sail): Птушкі ляцяць на поўдзень. (The birds are flying south.) (I love swimming.)
How It Works
You know this split from ісці and хадзіць and ехаць and ездзіць. Both verbs in each pair are imperfective.
Note the consonant changes in бегчы: бягу, бягуць have г, but бяжыш, бяжыць have ж (consonant changes).
When to use which.
- One direction, right now: Куды ты бяжыш? (Where are you running to?)
(I run every morning.)
(He can't swim.) See умець.
(The kids are running around the yard.)
Плыць is also used for ships, boats and things floating on water: Па рацэ плыве лодка. (A boat is sailing down the river.)
With prefixes these pairs become ordinary aspect pairs: прыбегчы / прыбягаць (to come running), прыляцець / прылятаць (to arrive by air), пераплыць / пераплываць (to swim across).

Common Mistakes
Using the one-direction verb for a habit.
A regular activity or sport needs the general verb: бегаць.
Using the general verb for one trip happening now.
На поўдзень gives one direction, and глядзі shows it is happening now, so use ляцець.
Using плыць for the ability to swim.
Ability is general, not one trip, so use плаваць after умець.
