везці / весці
Transporting and Leading
Везці / вазіць = to transport by vehicle. Весці / вадзіць = to lead, to take someone on foot: Мама вядзе сына ў садок. (Mom is taking her son to kindergarten.) Ён вадзіць машыну. (He drives a car.)
How It Works
These pairs work like ісці and хадзіць and несці and насіць, but add a passenger or cargo.
- везці (one trip): вязу, вязеш, вязе, вязём, везяце, вязуць; past вёз, везла, везлі; imperative вязі.
- вазіць (general): важу, возіш, возіць, возім, возіце, возяць; past вазіў.
- весці (one trip): вяду, вядзеш, вядзе, вядзём, ведзяце, вядуць; past вёў, вяла, вялі; imperative вядзі.
- вадзіць (general): ваджу, водзіш, водзіць, водзім, водзіце, водзяць; past вадзіў.
Watch the я-forms of the general verbs: з becomes ж and дз becomes дж, so важу and ваджу (consonant changes). The past of весці is вёў, with ў (past tense in -ў).
Examples of the split.
- Таксіст вязе нас у аэрапорт. (The taxi driver is taking us to the airport.) One trip, now.
- Бацька кожны дзень возіць дзяцей у школу. (Dad drives the kids to school every day.)
- Я ваджу дачку ў басейн па серадах. (I take my daughter to the pool on Wednesdays.)
Driving. Вадзіць машыну means to know how to drive, or to drive in general. For driving right now, use весці: Хто сёння вядзе машыну? (Who is driving today?)
Other uses of весці. A road can lead somewhere (Гэтая дарога вядзе ў лес.), and you can lead a meeting or keep a diary (весці сход, весці дзённік).
With prefixes they become aspect pairs: прывезці / прывозіць (to bring by vehicle), адвезці / адвозіць (to drive someone somewhere), прывесці / прыводзіць (to bring someone along).

Common Mistakes
Using the general verb for one trip happening now.

Using весці for transport by vehicle.
Бацька вядзе мяне на вакзал на машыне.Бацька вязе мяне на вакзал на машыне.Весці means leading someone on foot. На машыне (by car) needs везці.
Forgetting the consonant change in the я-form.
Я вадзю сына ў школу.Я ваджу сына ў школу.In the я-form, дз becomes дж: ваджу. Likewise вазіць gives важу.
