मत before a command means don't.

How It Works

ToCommandDon't
तूजामत जा
तुमजावमत जाव
आपजाइएमत जाइए

मत comes before the verb. The verb ending still shows who you are speaking to.

Awadhi also uses न in this place, often in gentle advice: न घबराव (don't worry). Use मत for ordinary orders.

For plain "not", use नाहीं: ऊ नाहीं आवत अहै. मत is only for commands.

You will hear it a lot at home and in the street: मत जाव, मत डेराव, मत रोव.
