जी

Showing Respect with जी

Level 2Sounds Like jī

जी after a name or family word shows respect.

How It Works

Use जी after a name, a family word or a job.

  • चाचा जी (uncle)
  • दादी जी (grandmother)
  • मास्टर जी (teacher)
  • भइया जी (older brother)

A respected person takes the plural verb: चाचा जी आवत अहैं, not अहै. The past uses -इन with an object (चाचा जी कहिन) and गए or आए without one, and the future uses -इहैं.

जी also answers politely. हाँ जी means yes, and नाहीं जी means no. Say जी alone when someone calls your name: it means "yes, I am listening".

It is common after names of adults you do not know well. With friends of your age, drop it.
