भइया / दीदी / चाचा
Family Words for Everyone
Awadhi speakers call even strangers by family words, which is friendly and polite.
How It Works
In an Awadhi village or town, "sir" and "madam" are rare. People address each other as family. It makes a request warmer, even to someone you have just met.
| Word | Used for |
|---|---|
| भइया | a man about your age or a little older |
| दीदी | a woman a little older than you |
| बहिनी | a girl or woman younger than you |
| चाचा जी | a man of your father's age |
| मौसी | a woman of your mother's age |
Choose the verb form to match. For a stranger, आप with the -इए form is safest: चाचा जी, हमका रस्ता बताइए. For someone close, तुम is fine.
These words often come first in the sentence, like a name.
