-নে for Yes or No Questions

Questions with -নে

Level 2Sounds Like nē

-নে makes a yes or no question: আপুনি আহিব খোজেনে? “do you want to come?”.

How It Works

A yes or no question in Assamese does not change the word order. It adds an ending.

StatementQuestion
আপুনি আহিব খোজে “you want to come”আপুনি আহিব খোজেনে? “do you want to come?”
তুমি স্কুললৈ যাবা “you will go to school”তুমি স্কুললৈ যাবানে? “will you go to school?”
ভাল “good”ভালনে? “is it good?”

You will also see নে written as a separate word, as in ভালে আছা নে? “are you well?”. Both ways are written.

The word নেকি does the same job. নেকি is a separate word after the sentence, and -নে is a joined ending.
