নেকি
Yes or No Questions with নেকি
নেকি comes last and asks a yes or no question: বগা নেকি? “is it white?”.
How It Works
নেকি is a small word that never changes. It follows the whole sentence, whether the sentence has a verb or not.
| Statement | Question |
|---|---|
| তুমি ছাত্ৰ। “You are a student.” | তুমি ছাত্ৰ নেকি? “Are you a student?” |
| আপোনাৰ জ্বৰ আছে। “You have a fever.” | আপোনাৰ জ্বৰ আছে নেকি? “Do you have a fever?” |
| ইয়াত চাহ আছে। “There is tea here.” | ইয়াত চাহ আছে নেকি? “Is there tea here?” |
The verb ending still follows the address level: তুমি ৰাতিপুৱা চাহ খোৱা নেকি? with তুমি and আপুনি ৰাতিপুৱা চাহ খায় নেকি? with আপুনি. Both mean “Do you drink tea in the morning?”.
For “yes” say হয় or অঁ, or repeat the verb, as in আছে। For “no” say নহয় “it is not” or নাই “there is none”, whichever fits the question. You will also meet নে and -নে as question words. They are taught later.
