কিয়

Why

Level 1Sounds Like kiẏa

কিয় means “why”: তুমি কিয় ভয় কৰা? “why are you afraid?”.

How It Works

কিয় asks for a reason. It usually stands before the verb, and often at the end when there is no verb.

WhereExample
before a verbআপুনি কিয় চিন্তা কৰে? “Why do you worry?”
at the end, no verbতুমি বিছনাত কিয়? “Why are you in bed?”

The verb still takes the ending for the person you talk to, so তুমি goes with -া (ভয় কৰা) and আপুনি goes with -ে (চিন্তা কৰে).

কিয় can also begin a question, as in কিয় তুমি ভয় কৰা? “Why are you afraid?”.

To answer, use the word কাৰণ “because”, which comes at Level 3.
