Proverb: Better Not to Have
আছে গৰু নাবাই হাল, থকাতকৈ নথকাই ভাল means “having an unused thing is worse than not having it”.
How It Works
| Half | Words | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| first | আছে গৰু নাবাই হাল | “there are cattle, but the plough is not used” |
| second | থকাতকৈ নথকাই ভাল | “not having is better than having” |
নাবাই is না- “not” and বাই, the -ি form of the verb “to plough”, as in হাল বাই “having ploughed”. In the second half থকা “having” takes -তকৈ “than”, the same ending that compares two things in the row on -তকৈ. নথকা is the negative of থকা, and it takes the focus ending -ই.
In plain words: ঘৰত থকা বস্তু ব্যৱহাৰ নকৰিলে, নথকাই ভাল “if you do not use what is in the house, it is better not to have it”.
The saying is about waste, and people use it about money, tools and talent that sit unused.
