Pronouns Attached to Prepositions

Level 2

In Arabic, pronouns like 'me', 'you', or 'him' are not separate words when they follow a preposition. Instead, they attach directly to the end of the preposition (e.g., 'with him' becomes 'ma'ahu').

How It Works

Attached pronouns are suffixes that fuse with prepositions to form a single unit. Grammatically, these pronouns are in the genitive case (mahall jarr).

Key rules for attachment include:

  • Alif Maqsoora Change: Prepositions ending in ى, such as إلى (to), على (on), and لدى (at/with), change the ى to the letter ي (Ya). Example: إليك (to you).
  • Vowel Harmony: The 3rd person pronouns (ـهُ، ـهُما، ـهُم، ـهُنَّ) change their vowel from 'u' to 'i' (ـهِ، ـهِما، ـهِم، ـهِنَّ) if the preceding sound is a 'kasra' (i) or a 'ya' (y). Example: فيهِ (in it) instead of 'fi-hu'.
  • The Preposition 'Fi': When في (in) attaches to the 1st person singular pronoun (-i), they fuse into فِيَّ (in me) with a shadda and fatha.
  • The Preposition 'Li': The preposition لِـ (for/to) changes its vowel to a 'fatha' (لَـ) when attached to any pronoun except the 1st person singular. Example: لَكَ (for you) but لي (for me).
  • N-Doubling: The prepositions مِن (from) and عَن (about) add a shadda to the final 'nun' when attaching the 1st person singular (-i) or 1st person plural (-na) suffixes. Examples: مِنّي (from me) and مِنّا (from us).

Examples (4)

  1. تحدثتُ إليها عن المشروع.

I spoke to her about the project.

    Word by Word: I-spoke to-her about the-project.

Shows the preposition 'ila' changing its final letter to 'ya' before the pronoun 'ha'.

  2. هذا الكتابُ لَكَ وليسَ لي.

This book is for you and not for me.

    Word by Word: This the-book for-you and-not for-me.

Demonstrates the 'li' changing to 'la' for 'you' (laka), but remaining 'li' for 'me' (li).

  3. وضعتُ المفتاحَ فيهِ.

I put the key in it.

    Word by Word: I-put the-key in-it.

Shows vowel harmony where the pronoun 'hu' becomes 'hi' because it follows the 'ya' in 'fi'.

  4. هل سمعتَ عَنّي؟

    Did you hear about me?

Word by Word: Did you-hear about-me?

Shows the doubling of the letter 'nun' when 'an' attaches to the 1st person suffix 'i'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using independent pronouns after a preposition.

    ذهبتُ إلى أنتَ
    ذهبتُ إليكَ

Independent pronouns like 'anta' cannot follow prepositions; you must use the attached suffix form '-ka'.

  • Forgetting the vowel harmony (hi/hu rule).

    فيهُ
    فيهِ

In MSA, if a pronoun follows a 'ya' or a 'kasra', the 'u' vowel must change to 'i' for phonetic harmony.

  • Keeping the Alif Maqsoora shape when attaching pronouns.

    إلىك
    إليكَ

The letter ى must change to a standard ي when a suffix is added.

Learn This First

To understand how pronouns attach to prepositions, you first need to be familiar with the basic prepositions themselves. Since the suffixes used are the same as those used for possession on nouns, having already learned the possessive endings (attached pronouns for nouns) makes this pattern a simple extension of that logic.
