السلام عليكم
Greeting and Reply
Greeting: السلام عليكم (As-salāmu ʿalaykum)
Reply: وعليكم السلام (Wa-ʿalaykumu s-salām)
How It Works
The greeting consists of two parts: As-salāmu (The Peace) and ʿalaykum (upon you).
- Grammar: In the greeting, As-salāmu is the Subject (Mubtada') and ʿalaykum is the prepositional phrase predicate (shibhu jumlah). In the reply, the order is inverted: Wa-ʿalaykumu s-salām.
- The Suffix -kum: This is the attached pronoun for 'you' (masculine plural). The plural is used as a mark of respect and, culturally, to address the individual along with the two recording angels (Kiraman Katibin) believed to accompany every person.
- Pronunciation: The 's' in salām is a Sun Letter, so the 'l' of the article al- is not pronounced (As-salāmu). In the reply, a small 'u' sound is added to the end of ʿalaykum (ʿalaykumu s-salām) to help the words flow together.
- Register: This is the most polite and standard way to greet someone. While casual alternatives like Marḥaban exist, this greeting is appropriate in almost every social or professional context.
