عن
About and Away from
The preposition عن ('an) is used to introduce a topic of discussion or to indicate physical or metaphorical distance and separation.
How It Works
The preposition عن is one of the most frequent particles in Arabic. Its usage can be broken down into several primary categories:
1. Topic and Subject Matter
When used with verbs of speaking, thinking, or asking, it translates to 'about' or 'concerning'.
Example: تحدثنا عن السفر (We talked about travel).
2. Separation and Distance
Its classical root meaning is 'passing over' or 'moving away'. It is used with verbs of distancing, avoiding, or differing. It is also the specific preposition used with the adjective 'far' (بعيد) to indicate distance from a point. It can also mean 'off' a surface, such as taking something off a table.
3. Searching and Seeking
One of the most common verb-preposition pairs in Arabic uses عن to mean 'for' when searching.
Example: أبحث عن مفاتيحي (I am searching for my keys).
4. Satisfaction and Pleasure
The verb رضي (to be pleased/satisfied) is always paired with عن. This is most famously seen in the phrase رضي الله عنه (May God be pleased with him).
5. Reason and Motive (Causal)
It can indicate the reason or motive behind an action, often translated as 'out of' or 'because of'.
Example: فعل ذلك عن قصد (He did that on purpose/out of intention).
6. Time and Lapse (Temporal)
In certain contexts, it indicates a lapse of time or 'after'. A very common expression is عما قليل (shortly/after a little while).
7. Substitution and Representation
It is used to mean 'on behalf of' or 'instead of'. While بدلاً عن is used, note that بدلاً من is the preferred and more frequent expression for 'instead of' in Modern Standard Arabic.
8. Narrative Authority (Isnad)
In historical texts, عن indicates the source of a report, meaning 'on the authority of'.
9. Morphological Rules
- Pronoun Attachment: When pronouns attach to عن, the final nūn is doubled for the 1st person: عنّي (about me) and عنّا (about us).
- Definite Articles: If the following word starts with the definite article, the nūn takes a small kasra (عنِ) to avoid two silent consonants meeting.
- Contractions: When combined with the word ما, it becomes عمّا. However, in the question 'About what?', the alif is dropped, resulting in عمّ؟. When combined with the question word من (who), it becomes عمّن.
Examples (6)
- تحدثنا طويلاً عن مستقبل التعليم.
We talked at length about the future of education.
Word by Word: We-talked longly about future (of) the-education.
Here, 'an introduces the topic of the conversation.
- ابتعد عن التدخين للحفاظ على صحتك.
Stay away from smoking to maintain your health.
Word by Word: Stay-away from the-smoking for-the-maintaining on your-health.
In this context, 'an indicates separation or avoidance.
- رضي الله عنه.
May God be pleased with him.
Word by Word: Was-pleased God about-him.
The verb 'radiya' (to be pleased) is idiomatic and always takes the preposition 'an.
- أخذتُ الكتابَ عن الطاولةِ.
I took the book off the table.
Word by Word: I-took the-book off the-table.
Here, 'an indicates physical removal or moving something 'off' a surface.
- عمّ تتحدث؟
What are you talking about?
Word by Word: About-what you-talk?
When 'an is combined with the interrogative 'ma', the alif is dropped, resulting in 'amma (عمّ).
- بيتي بعيد عن المدرسة.
My house is far from the school.
Word by Word: My-house far from the-school.
The adjective 'ba'id' (far) specifically requires 'an to indicate the point of distance.
Common Mistakes
Using 'min' instead of 'an' for topics.
تحدثتُ من الفيلم.تحدثتُ عن الفيلم.While 'min' means 'from', it cannot be used to mean 'about' a topic. Use 'an' with verbs of speaking.
Leaving out the shadda on عنّي.
عَنِيعَنِّيWritten without vowel marks, عني looks the same, and that is normal. When you vowel or read it, the nūn is doubled: عَنِّي. The nūn of عن joins the nūn that is added before the 'me' ending.
Forgetting the genitive case ending after 'an'.
بحثنا عن الولدُ.بحثنا عن الولدِ.As a preposition, 'an' always puts the following noun into the genitive case (majrūr), usually ending in a kasra.
