Stacking Particles: maar net, sommer net

Level 5

Stack small words to soften or colour a sentence: Ek wou maar net vra. (I just wanted to ask.) Hy het sommer net gegaan. (He just left, for no reason.)

How It Works

1. Common combinations.

  • maar net — just, only; makes a request sound modest: Ek wou maar net vra.
  • sommer net — just, for no particular reason: Hy het sommer net gegaan. (see sommer)
  • tog maar — go ahead, do; friendly encouragement: Kom tog maar in. (see tog)
  • maar liewer — had better: Ons moet maar liewer vroeg ry.
  • mos maar — as you know, that is just how it is: Dis mos maar so. (see mos)

2. What each part adds. Maar softens and adds a sense of "there is nothing else to do". Net limits the action to just this. Sommer adds "without a special reason". Tog adds warmth or insistence.

3. Position. Particles sit in the middle of the clause, after the finite verb and the subject, and before the verbs at the end. They do not go at the very start of the sentence.

4. Tone. Particles make speech sound natural and friendly. They belong to spoken Afrikaans and informal writing, and they are rare in official texts.

Examples (6)

  1. Ek wou maar net vra of alles reg is.

I just wanted to ask whether everything is all right.

Word by Word: I wanted but just ask whether everything right is.

Maar net makes the question sound modest and polite.

  2. Hy het sommer net gegaan, sonder om te groet.

He just left, without saying goodbye.

Word by Word: He has simply just gone, without to greet.

  3. Kom tog maar in, die deur is oop.

Do come in, the door is open.

Word by Word: Come yet but in, the door is open.

  4. Dis mos maar so met kinders.

That's just how it is with kids, you know.

Word by Word: It's as-you-know but so with children.

  5. Ons moet maar liewer vroeg ry.

    We had better leave early.

Word by Word: We must but rather early drive.

  6. Nou ja, dan moet ons dit maar net self doen.

Oh well, then we'll just have to do it ourselves.

Word by Word: Now yes, then must we it but just self do.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the particles at the start of the sentence, like English "just".

Maar net wou ek vra of alles reg is.
Ek wou maar net vra of alles reg is.

Particles belong in the middle of the clause, after the finite verb and the subject, not in first place.

  • Putting the particles after the verb at the end.

Ons moet vroeg ry maar liewer.
Ons moet maar liewer vroeg ry.

Particles sit in the middle of the clause, before the verbs at the end. Maar liewer comes before vroeg ry.
