Wnei di...? / Wnewch chi...?
Will You? Wnei Di...? Wnewch Chi...?
Wnei di...? (to ti) and Wnewch chi...? (to chi) mean "Will you...?". They are the everyday way to ask someone to do something.
How It Works
Asking. Wnei di / Wnewch chi + soft-mutated verb-noun. Add plîs, os gweli di'n dda (to ti) or os gwelwch yn dda (to chi) to be extra polite.
- Wnei di ddod gyda fi? — Will you come with me?
- Wnewch chi gau'r drws, os gwelwch yn dda? — Would you close the door, please?
Answering. Answer for yourself with the I form:
- yes: Gwnaf (speech: Gwna)
- no: Na wnaf (speech: Na wna)
If the question was to a group, answer for "we": Gwnawn / Na wnawn. See echo answers in other tenses.
About other people. Wnaiff e helpu? (South) / Wneith o helpu? (North) — Will he help? Answer Gwnaiff / Na wnaiff or Gwneith / Na wneith.
Why the mutation? Wnei and wnewch are softened because they start a question (from gwnei, gwnewch), and the verb-noun after the subject softens as the object of gwneud. See af i do i ca i gwna i and soft mutation of the direct object.
