Relative oedd / fydd
Relatives in Past and Future: Oedd and Fydd
Sy means "who is" or "which is". For "who was" use oedd, and for "who will be" use fydd.
How It Works
Three tenses side by side
- Present: y dyn sy'n byw yma — the man who lives here (see sy and sydd)
- Past: y dyn oedd yn byw yma — the man who lived here / used to live here
- Future: y dyn fydd yn byw yma — the man who will live here
With wedi: y trên oedd wedi gadael (the train that had left), y rhai fydd wedi gorffen (the ones who will have finished).
Conditional: rhywun fyddai'n gallu helpu or, in the North, rhywun fasai'n gallu helpu — someone who could help.
After question words the same forms appear, just like Pwy sy...?: Pwy oedd yno? (Who was there?), Beth fydd yn digwydd? (What will happen?)
Careful and spoken. Formal Welsh: y bobl a fydd yn dod, y dyn a oedd yn byw yma. Speech: y bobl fydd yn dod, y dyn oedd yn byw yma.
Negatives. Speech adds ddim: y dyn oedd ddim yn gwybod, y plant fydd ddim yn dod. Careful Welsh uses nad oedd and na fydd.
Oedd, not roedd. A statement says Roedd y dyn yn byw yma, but when the man is the subject of the relative clause it is oedd: y dyn oedd yn byw yma. Roedd after a noun belongs to the other kind of relative clause, where the noun is not the subject: y tŷ roedd e'n byw ynddo (see y + preposition).

Common Mistakes
Using roedd for "who was".
y dyn roedd yn byw ymay dyn oedd yn byw ymaWhen the noun is the subject, the relative past of bod is oedd, not roedd.
Not softening bydd.
y bobl bydd yn dody bobl fydd yn dodThe relative a softens bydd to fydd, and the mutation stays even when a is dropped.
