ata i / wrtho fe

Forms of at and Wrth

Level 3

At is for writing or coming to someone: ata i (to me). Wrth is for telling someone: Dwedodd hi wrtho fe (She told him; wrtho fo in the North).

How It Works

At (to, towards).

  • ata i — to me
  • atat ti — to you
  • ato fe (South), ato fo (North) — to him
  • ati hi — to her
  • aton ni — to us
  • atoch chi — to you
  • atyn nhw — to them

Wrth (to, by).

  • wrtha i — to me
  • wrthot ti — to you
  • wrtho fe (South), wrtho fo (North) — to him
  • wrthi hi — to her
  • wrthon ni — to us
  • wrthoch chi — to you
  • wrthyn nhw — to them

Speech also has atot ti and wrthat ti, and in some Southern speech to me is ato i.

Verbs that take at. ysgrifennu at (write to), anfon at (send to), mynd at (go to a person), dod at (come to), edrych ymlaen at (look forward to): Dw i'n edrych ymlaen ato fe (I'm looking forward to it; North: ato fo).

Verbs that take wrth. dweud wrth (tell): Dwedodd hi wrtho fe (She told him; North: wrtho fo), Paid â dweud wrthyn nhw! (Don't tell them!)

Wrth also means by or while. wrth y drws (by the door); with a verb-noun, see wrth + verb-noun. Wrthi also appears in wrthi'n (busy doing).

Choosing between i and at is explained in i or at.

Common Mistakes

  • Using plain wrth before a pronoun.

    Dwedais i wrth fe.
    Dwedais i wrtho fe.

Before a pronoun, wrth takes its personal form: wrtho fe (wrtho fo in the North).
