Dates: y cyntaf o Fawrth

Dates

Level 3

Say a date as the first of March: y cyntaf o Fawrth. For on a date, add ar: ar y cyntaf o Fawrth.

How It Works

The months after o.

  • Ionawr → o Ionawr (no change)
  • Chwefror → o Chwefror (no change)
  • Mawrth → o Fawrth
  • Ebrill → o Ebrill
  • Mai → o Fai
  • Mehefin → o Fehefin
  • Gorffennaf → o Orffennaf
  • Awst → o Awst
  • Medi → o Fedi
  • Hydref → o Hydref
  • Tachwedd → o Dachwedd
  • Rhagfyr → o Ragfyr

The day is an ordinal. Use the forms from ordinal numbers, in their masculine form: y cyntaf, yr ail, y trydydd, y pedwerydd, y pumed. Days after the 10th use the traditional numbers: yr unfed ar ddeg (11th), y pymthegfed (15th), yr ugeinfed (20th), yr unfed ar hugain (21st), y pumed ar hugain (25th), yr unfed ar ddeg ar hugain (31st). See traditional counting.

On a date. Put ar in front: ar y degfed o Fehefin (on 10 June). The y after ar does not change.

Asking. Beth ydy'r dyddiad heddiw? (What's the date today?) — Yr ail o Fai. Pryd mae dy ben-blwydd di? (When is your birthday?) — Ar y trydydd o Awst.

In writing dates are often shortened, as in 1 Mawrth. Read them aloud with the full pattern.

Examples (6)

  1. Mae Dydd Gŵyl Dewi ar y cyntaf o Fawrth.

St David's Day is on the first of March.

Mawrth softens to Fawrth after o.

  2. Beth ydy'r dyddiad heddiw? Yr ail o Fai.

What's the date today? The second of May.

  3. Mae fy mhen-blwydd i ar y degfed o Fehefin.

My birthday is on the tenth of June.

Mehefin softens to Fehefin after o.

  4. Dydd Nadolig ydy'r pumed ar hugain o Ragfyr.

Christmas Day is the twenty-fifth of December.

Rhagfyr softens to Ragfyr. The ordinal uses the traditional number: pumed ar hugain.

  5. Dechreuodd y cwrs ar y pedwerydd o Ionawr.

The course started on the fourth of January.

Ionawr starts with a vowel, so it does not change.

  6. Dw i'n mynd ar wyliau ar y pymthegfed o Orffennaf.

I'm going on holiday on the fifteenth of July.

Gorffennaf loses its g after o.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to soften the month after o.

    y cyntaf o Mawrth
    y cyntaf o Fawrth

O causes soft mutation, so Mawrth becomes Fawrth.

  • Using a counting number instead of an ordinal.

ar yr un deg pump o Fai
    ar y pymthegfed o Fai

Dates use ordinals (fifteenth), not counting numbers (fifteen).
