For long adjectives, say mwy + adjective: mwy diddorol (more interesting).

How It Works

Which adjectives? Adjectives with two or more syllables usually use mwy: diddorol (interesting), cyfforddus (comfortable), deallus (clever), prydferth (beautiful). Short adjectives take -ach instead. With some two-syllable words you will hear both.

After yn only mwy changes: mwy → yn fwy. The adjective after it does not mutate: Mae'r llyfr yn fwy diddorol na'r ffilm.

Than. Use na before a consonant and nag before a vowel: yn fwy defnyddiol nag o'n i'n meddwl (more useful than I thought).

Less. Llai (less) works the same way: llai diddorol (less interesting). Llai starts with ll, so it stays the same after yn: Mae'r ail ffilm yn llai diddorol.

More of something. Before a noun, mwy o means more: mwy o amser (more time). Mwy is also the comparative of mawr (big); see irregular comparatives.

For the most, use mwyaf: y mwyaf diddorol.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to soften mwy after yn.

    Mae'r llyfr yn mwy diddorol.
    Mae'r llyfr yn fwy diddorol.

    Mwy comes right after yn, so it takes the soft mutation: fwy.

  • Softening the adjective after mwy.

    Mae'r llyfr yn fwy ddiddorol.
    Mae'r llyfr yn fwy diddorol.

    Only mwy softens. The adjective after it keeps its normal form.
