mynd yn / dod yn

Becoming: Mynd Yn and Dod Yn

Level 3

Welsh has no single verb for become. Use mynd yn (go) or dod yn (come) + a description: Mae hi'n mynd yn dywyll (It's getting dark).

How It Works

Mynd yn: go, get.

  • Mae hi'n mynd yn dywyll. — It's getting dark.
  • Aeth hi'n sâl. — She got ill.
  • Mae'r llaeth wedi mynd yn ddrwg. — The milk has gone bad.

Dod yn: come to be, become.

  • Daeth hi'n athrawes. — She became a teacher.
  • Bydd e'n dod yn haws. — It will get easier. (South; in the North: Bydd o'n dod yn haws.)

The mutation. This yn works like yn before a description: tywyll → dywyll, drwg → ddrwg, mawr → fawr. Ll and rh stay the same: Mae ei gwallt hi'n mynd yn llwyd (Her hair is going grey). After a vowel, yn shortens to 'n: Aeth hi'n sâl.

Any tense. Use any form of mynd or dod: Mae hi'n mynd yn grac (She's getting angry), Aeth hi'n grac (She got angry).

With comparatives. These verbs often go with comparatives: Mae'r dyddiau'n mynd yn fyrrach (The days are getting shorter).

A handy shortcut. Many common changes also have their own verb-noun, such as tywyllu (get dark), oeri (get cold) and gwella (get better): Mae hi'n tywyllu.

Examples (6)

  1. Mae hi'n mynd yn dywyll.

    It's getting dark.

Tywyll softens to dywyll after yn.

  2. Aeth e'n sâl ddoe.

    He got ill yesterday.

S never mutates, so sâl stays the same. South: e. In the North: Aeth o'n sâl ddoe.

  3. Daeth hi'n athrawes.

    She became a teacher.

Athrawes starts with a vowel, so nothing changes.

  4. Mae'r llaeth wedi mynd yn ddrwg.

    The milk has gone bad.

Drwg softens to ddrwg. Llaeth (milk) is the Southern and standard word; the North says llefrith.

  5. Mae ei wallt e'n mynd yn llwyd.

    His hair is going grey.

Ll does not change after this yn. South: e. In the North: Mae ei wallt o'n mynd yn llwyd.

  6. Mae'r dyddiau'n mynd yn fyrrach.

    The days are getting shorter.

    Byrrach (shorter) softens to fyrrach.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting the soft mutation after yn.

    Mae hi'n mynd yn tywyll.
    Mae hi'n mynd yn dywyll.

The yn before a description causes soft mutation, so t becomes d.
