rhy + Soft Mutation
Too: Rhy + Soft Mutation
rhy + a soft-mutated adjective = too ...: bach → rhy fach (too small), poeth → rhy boeth (too hot).
How It Works
The change after rhy
- bach → rhy fach too small
- mawr → rhy fawr too big
- da → rhy dda too good
- poeth → rhy boeth too hot
- drud → rhy ddrud too expensive
- cynnar → rhy gynnar too early
- pell → rhy bell too far
- hwyr → rhy hwyr too late (h does not change)
- llwyd → rhy lwyd too grey
- rhad → rhy rad too cheap
Ll and rh change too. Unlike mor, rhy softens ll and rh: rhy lwyd, rhy rad.
Rhy after yn. The linking yn never changes rh, so rhy stays rhy: Mae'r te'n rhy boeth. It is the adjective after rhy that softens. See Describing With Yn.
Rhy or iawn? Mae'n rhy oer (It's too cold) but Mae'n oer iawn (It's very cold). See Very: Adjective + Iawn.
Too ... to. Add i + a soft-mutated verb-noun: Dw i'n rhy flinedig i fynd allan (I'm too tired to go out).
Too much, too many. With nouns, use gormod o: gormod o waith (too much work). See Quantity Words + O + Soft Mutation.
