tính + Adjective

The Property of Being

Level 5

The prefix tính attaches to adjectives (and some verbs) to form abstract nouns that represent measurable, objective, or inherent qualities.

How It Works

The word tính is a highly productive marker in formal, academic, technical, and journalistic Vietnamese. While primarily used as a prefix, it also appears as a suffix in older Sino-Vietnamese borrowings (e.g., nam tính / masculinity, nữ tính / femininity, giới tính / gender). Note that this abstract marker is completely distinct from the common verb tính (to calculate or plan, as in tính tiền).

1. What it attaches to:
As a prefix, it strongly prefers Sino-Vietnamese (Hán-Việt) bisyllabic roots. While it primarily attaches to adjectives (e.g., chính xác → tính chính xác / accuracy), it frequently attaches to verbs to describe inherent qualities (e.g., ứng dụng → tính ứng dụng / applicability), and to nouns to form abstract properties (e.g., khoa học → tính khoa học / scientific nature). However, it is also increasingly attached to native, monosyllabic Vietnamese words (e.g., tính mới / novelty, tính mở / openness).

2. The difference between Tính and Sự:
Learners often confuse tính with sự.

  • Sự denotes a state, event, or process (e.g., sự cạnh tranh = the act of competition). Use it when you mean 'the act/state of...'.
  • Tính denotes an inherent property, characteristic, or metric (e.g., tính cạnh tranh = competitiveness). Use it when you mean 'the property of...'.

3. Debunking common myths:
A widely repeated inaccuracy is that 'sự is for verbs, and tính is for adjectives.' This is false. Sự frequently attaches to adjectives (sự thông minh / intelligence), and tính frequently attaches to verbs (tính giáo dục / educational nature). Another misconception is that adding tính creates an adjective (because the Vietnamese word for adjective is tính từ). In reality, tính + word always creates an abstract noun.

4. How to use it in a sentence:
Because it creates a noun, you cannot use degree words like rất directly with it. Instead, use verbs like có (to have) or mang (to carry/bear) — where có tính is standard and neutral, while mang tính feels more formal, literary, or abstract — and describe the level with adjectives like cao (high) or thấp (low). Example: có tính ứng dụng cao (has high applicability), not rất tính ứng dụng. However, you can use rất if it modifies the verbs có or mang (e.g., rất có tính ứng dụng or mang tính ứng dụng rất cao). Furthermore, in formal, academic, and journalistic contexts, mang tính is frequently expanded to mang tính chất (bears the nature/character of).

5. When NOT to use it:
Do not use tính when simply describing a subject. Use the bare adjective instead. For example, say Dữ liệu này chính xác (This data is accurate), not Dữ liệu này tính chính xác. Only use tính when referring to the abstract property itself, such as Kiểm tra tính chính xác của dữ liệu (Check the accuracy of the data).

Examples (4)

  1. Dự án này có tính khả thi rất cao.

This project has very high feasibility.

Word by Word: Project this have property feasible very high.

Here, 'tính' turns the adjective 'khả thi' (feasible) into the measurable metric 'tính khả thi' (feasibility).

  2. Chúng ta cần đảm bảo tính chính xác của dữ liệu.

We need to ensure the accuracy of the data.

Word by Word: We need ensure property accurate of data.

'Tính chính xác' represents accuracy as an objective, measurable property.

  3. Phần mềm này có tính ứng dụng rộng rãi.

    This software has widespread applicability.

Word by Word: Software this have property apply widespread.

An example of 'tính' attaching to a verb ('ứng dụng' - to apply) to create a noun meaning 'applicability'.

  4. Trò chơi này mang tính giáo dục.

This game has an educational nature.

Word by Word: Game this carry property educate.

Because 'tính giáo dục' is a noun phrase, it is often used with verbs like 'có' (to have) or 'mang' (to carry/bear).

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'tính' for emotions or physical dimensions.

Cô ấy không thể giấu được tính buồn.
Cô ấy không thể giấu được nỗi buồn.

Learners often try to attach 'tính' to basic native adjectives for emotions or sizes. 'Tính' is for objective properties and metrics. For emotions, use niềm / nỗi. For physical dimensions, use specific nouns like 'chiều' (e.g., chiều cao = height).

  • Treating 'tính' as an independent noun and inserting 'của' (of).

Chúng tôi đang đánh giá tính của khả thi.
Chúng tôi đang đánh giá tính khả thi.

In this pattern, 'tính' is a bound prefix, not an independent possessable noun. You cannot separate it from its root word with 'của'. (Note: As a standalone noun, 'tính' means 'personality', which is a different usage).

  • Assuming 'tính + word' creates an adjective and modifying it directly.

Dự án này rất tính khả thi.
Dự án này có tính khả thi rất cao.

Adding 'tính' creates an abstract noun, not an adjective. Therefore, you cannot modify it directly with degree words like 'rất' (very). You must use a verb like 'có' (to have) and modify the noun phrase.
