Noun / Adjective + hóa

-ise or -ify

Level 5

The Vietnamese equivalent of English suffixes like -ize, -ify, or -ization. It attaches to the end of a word to indicate a systemic transformation or process.

How It Works

Understanding how to use hóa will significantly elevate your formal and professional Vietnamese.

1. What it attaches to:

  • Sino-Vietnamese words: It attaches most naturally to Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary, especially two-syllable adjectives and nouns (e.g., hiện đại [modern] → hiện đại hóa [modernize], cụ thể [specific] → cụ thể hóa [specify]).
  • Monosyllabic & Proper Nouns: It works with single-syllable roots (e.g., số [number] → số hóa [digitize]) and proper nouns (e.g., Mỹ hóa [Americanize]).
  • Native Vietnamese words: While historically restricted to Sino-Vietnamese roots, it is increasingly productive with native adjectives to show systemic change (e.g., trẻ [young] → trẻ hóa [rejuvenate]).
  • Nouns (Material, Spatial, Conceptual): It is highly productive with various nouns to mean 'to turn into [Noun]' or 'to make [Noun]-like', which is extremely common in modern media (e.g., bê tông [concrete] → bê tông hóa [to concrete over], nhựa [asphalt] → nhựa hóa [to pave with asphalt]).

2. Dual Function (Verb and Noun):
Unlike English, which uses different suffixes for verbs (-ize) and nouns (-ization), hóa does both. For example, công nghiệp hóa can mean 'to industrialize' (verb) or 'industrialization' (noun) depending on the context. To unambiguously force the noun reading ('-ization'), speakers frequently add sự (event/state) or quá trình (process) before the word (e.g., sự công nghiệp hóa or quá trình công nghiệp hóa).

3. Hóa vs. Làm (cho):
Both mean 'to make [adjective]', but they belong to different registers. Use làm cho or just làm for everyday, literal, or individual actions (e.g., làm sạch = to clean). Use hóa for formal, systemic processes (e.g., thương mại hóa = to commercialize).

4. Spelling Variation:
You will frequently encounter both hóa and hoá. Both are correct, reflecting two different officially accepted orthographic rules for placing tone marks on vowel combinations with a medial glide.

5. Standalone Verb (Hóa + X):
Be aware that hóa can also function as a standalone verb meaning 'to turn into' or 'to become'. In this case, the word order reverses to Hóa + X (e.g., hóa đá [to turn to stone], hóa rồng [to become a dragon]). This is syntactically different from the suffix usage (X + hóa).

6. Hóa as 'Chemistry':
Note that hóa is also a standalone noun or root meaning 'chemistry' or 'chemical' (e.g., hóa học [chemistry], hóa chất [chemical]). In these specific cases, it is not acting as the '-ize' suffix.

Linguistic Note: Vietnamese is fundamentally an isolating language with very little derivational morphology. However, modern linguists classify hóa as a 'semi-affix' (bán phụ tố)—a bound morpheme that systematically changes word class and meaning. While affixation is a minor process overall, this specific semi-affix is highly productive.

Examples (5)

  1. Chính phủ đang đẩy mạnh số hóa các dịch vụ công.

The government is accelerating the digitization of public services.

Word by Word: Government currently push strong digitize plural service public.

Here, 'số hóa' (digitization) functions as a verbal noun representing a widespread, systemic process.

  2. Nhiều công ty phải hiện đại hóa dây chuyền sản xuất để cạnh tranh.

Many companies must modernize their production lines to compete.

Word by Word: Many company must modernize line production in order to compete.

'Hiện đại hóa' (modernize) functions as a verb here, showing the action of transforming the production lines.

  3. Việc trẻ hóa đội ngũ lãnh đạo là rất cần thiết.

Rejuvenating the leadership team is very necessary.

Word by Word: Act rejuvenate team leadership is very necessary.

An example of 'hóa' attaching to a native Vietnamese adjective ('trẻ' - young) to create a formal concept ('trẻ hóa' - rejuvenate).

  4. Toàn cầu hóa mang lại cả cơ hội và thách thức.

Globalization brings both opportunities and challenges.

Word by Word: Globalize bring back both opportunity and challenge.

  5. Họ đang cố gắng thương mại hóa sản phẩm này.

They are trying to commercialize this product.

Common Mistakes

  • Over-applying 'hóa' to native words for simple, everyday changes.

Tôi cần sạch hóa phòng này.
Tôi cần làm sạch phòng này.

Because 'hóa' translates to '-ify' or '-ize', learners often attach it to basic native adjectives (like 'sạch' - clean) to mean 'to clean/purify'. However, 'hóa' implies a formal, systemic transformation. For everyday, literal, or individual actions, you must use 'làm' or 'làm cho'.

  • Confusing state nominalizers with process nominalizers.

Different MeaningSự hiện đại của nông nghiệp là mục tiêu chính.
Hiện đại hóa nông nghiệp là mục tiêu chính.

'Sự hiện đại của nông nghiệp là mục tiêu chính' is grammatical, but 'sự hiện đại' means 'modernity' (the state of being modern). To express 'modernization' (the active process of becoming modern), use 'hiện đại hóa'. The 'hóa' suffix already allows the word to work as a noun for a process.

Learn This First

The pattern 'X + hóa' is a formal word-building suffix used to create verbs or nouns meaning 'to make X' or 'the process of becoming X'. To understand it, learners need a basic grasp of Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary, as this suffix is not used with native Vietnamese words (e.g., one says 'hiện đại hóa' for 'modernize', but not with purely native adjectives).
