được + Noun

Receiving Something Good

Level 2

The pattern được + Noun means to receive, get, or achieve something good.

How It Works

Because Vietnamese has no verb conjugation, được never changes form. You simply place it directly before the noun: Subject + được + Noun. However, because Vietnamese frequently allows Dropping The Subject, the subject is often omitted in spoken language when the context is clear (e.g., excitedly exclaiming Được 10 điểm! instead of Tôi được 10 điểm!).

It is important to distinguish được from other words that translate to 'get', 'receive', or 'have' in English:

  • Compared to bị: English uses 'get' for both good and bad things (get a present, get sick). In Vietnamese, được is for positive or neutral things. For negative or undesirable things, you most commonly use bị + Noun, though other verbs like chịu or mắc also exist.
  • Compared to nhận: The verb nhận means to accept or receive something, which can be physical (like a parcel) or abstract (like nhận trách nhiệm - to take responsibility, or nhận lỗi - to admit a mistake). Using được instead specifically highlights the benefit, luck, or positive result. Note that they are frequently combined into the compound verb nhận được (to successfully receive).
  • Compared to có: While có (To Have / There Is) expresses neutral possession or existence, được implies an acquisition, achievement, or a positive change in state.

Additionally, được + Noun is the standard way to express winning a prize, scoring points, or gaining an advantage. It is also commonly used with numbers to express reaching or attaining a specific amount or age, using the formula được + Number + Noun. In English, this often translates simply to the verb 'to be' or 'to reach' (e.g., Con chó được 5 tuổi = The dog is 5 years old). When expressing having a baby, it is standard to use được as a particle indicating the successful completion of the main verb (rather than being the main verb itself) after verbs like sinh or đẻ (e.g., Cô ấy mới sinh được một bé trai = She just had a baby boy). Note that when expressing the duration of an activity (e.g., achieving 2 years of study), được acts as a bridge after the main verb, translating to 'for [amount of time] so far' (For (A Length Of Time So Far)) (e.g., Tôi học tiếng Việt được 2 năm = I have studied Vietnamese for 2 years), rather than sitting alone as the main active verb. This pattern also appears in common fixed phrases indicating a successful outcome, such as được giá (to get a good price) and được mùa (to have a good harvest).

Note on Structure: It is crucial to distinguish this pattern from others using được to avoid confusing its active, passive, modal, resultative, and adjectival functions:

  • được + Noun = Active verb (to get, receive, achieve, win)
  • được + (Noun/Agent) + Verb or simply được + Verb = Passive marker meaning 'to have a good thing done to you' (e.g., được khen = to be praised) (Passive For Something Welcome)
  • được + Verb = Modal verb for permission (May / Be Allowed To) or having the opportunity/privilege to do something (getting to do something)
  • Verb + được = Ability or successful result (Can (managed to))
  • được = Adjective meaning 'okay', 'fine', or 'acceptable' (e.g., Món này ăn cũng được)

Examples (5)

  1. Hôm qua tôi chơi bài và được hai mươi đô.

Yesterday I played cards and won twenty dollars.

Word by Word: Yesterday I play card and get two ten dollar.

Here, 'được' translates naturally to 'won' because the money is a positive acquisition.

  2. Cuối năm em ấy được phần thưởng.

At the end of the year, she got a reward.

Word by Word: End year younger-sibling that get reward.

  3. Em vừa được thư của bố.

I just got a letter from dad.

Word by Word: I just get letter belonging-to dad.

Here, 'được' is used to state the neutral or positive fact of receiving a letter.

  4. Con trai tôi được điểm mười môn toán.

My son got a ten in math.

Word by Word: Child male my get score ten subject math.

A perfect score is a highly desirable achievement, making 'được' the perfect verb to use.

  5. Em bé được năm tuổi.

The baby is five years old.

Word by Word: Younger-sibling baby get five age.

In this context, 'được' expresses attaining or reaching a specific quantity, such as age.

Common Mistakes

  • Overgeneralizing the English word 'to get' and using 'được' for negative things.

    Tôi được cảm.
    Tôi bị cảm.

In English, you can 'get' a cold or 'get' into an accident. In Vietnamese, được is for positive or neutral things. For negative experiences or conditions, you most commonly use bị + Noun (though other verbs like mắc or chịu are also used depending on the context).
