oʻz

Self: Oʻz

Level 2

Oʻz means self or own. With an ending it means myself, yourself and so on: Buni oʻzim qildim (I did it myself). Before a noun it means own: oʻz uyim (my own house).

How It Works

Oʻz is the Uzbek word for self. Used on its own, it always has a possessive ending that shows the person, the same endings as in -(i)m and -(s)i:

  • oʻzim: myself
  • oʻzing: yourself (familiar)
  • oʻzi: himself, herself, itself
  • oʻzimiz: ourselves
  • oʻzingiz: yourself, yourselves (polite)
  • oʻzlari: themselves (oʻzi is also used)

1. By myself. Buni oʻzim qildim (I did this myself). Bola oʻzi kiyindi (The child got dressed by himself).

2. Doing something to yourself. When the object is the same person as the subject, use oʻz with a case ending, not men or u: Oʻzingizni ehtiyot qiling! (Take care of yourself!), Oʻzimga choy quydim (I poured myself some tea). Compare meni, menga, which are for other people's actions on me.

3. Own. Before a noun, oʻz stays bare and means own. The noun after it takes the possessive ending: oʻz uyim (my own house), oʻz ishingiz (your own business). With he or she, oʻz points back to the subject: Anvar oʻz kitobini oldi (Anvar took his own book). Anvar uning kitobini oldi usually means he took someone else's book.

4. The … himself. After a noun with -ning, oʻzi adds stress: Direktorning oʻzi keldi (The director himself came).

For actions between two people, such as each other, see bir-biri.

Examples (6)

  1. Buni oʻzim qildim.

    I did this myself.

    Word by Word: This-(object) self-my did-I.

  2. Hozir oʻz uyimda yashayman.

Now I live in my own house.

Word by Word: Now own house-my-in live-I.

The noun keeps its ending: uyim, then -da.

  3. Direktorning oʻzi keldi.

    The director himself came.

Word by Word: Director-of self-his came.

    Oʻzi stresses the person.

  4. Oʻzingizni ehtiyot qiling!

    Take care of yourself!

Word by Word: Self-your-(object) careful do!

The object is the same person as the subject.

  5. Bola oʻzi kiyindi.

The child got dressed by himself.

Word by Word: Child self-his dressed.

  6. Anvar oʻz kitobini oldi.

    Anvar took his own book.

Word by Word: Anvar own book-his-the took.

    Oʻz points back to Anvar.

Common Mistakes

  • Using oʻz without an ending.

    Buni oʻz qildim.
    Buni oʻzim qildim.

On its own, oʻz always needs a possessive ending. For myself, say oʻzim.

  • Leaving the noun bare after oʻz.

    Bu oʻz uy.
    Bu oʻz uyim.

After oʻz, the noun still needs a possessive ending that shows whose it is: oʻz uyim, oʻz uyingiz.

  • Using men for myself.

    Men meni koʻzguda koʻrdim.
    Men oʻzimni koʻzguda koʻrdim.

When you do something to yourself, use oʻz with the ending: oʻzimni.
