Is Being Done: -ilmoqda

-ilmoqda means is being done. Make the verb passive, then add -moqda: Yangi maktablar qurilmoqda (New schools are being built).

How It Works

Two steps. First make the stem passive with -il, -l, -in or -n, then add -moqda:

  • qur- → quril- → qurilmoqda (is being built)
  • oʻqi- → oʻqil- → oʻqilmoqda (is being read)
  • ol- → olin- → olinmoqda (is being taken)
  • tozala- → tozalan- → tozalanmoqda (is being cleaned)

Person. The third person needs no extra ending, and news usually leaves out -lar even with a plural subject: Yangi yoʻllar qurilmoqda (New roads are being built).

Speech and writing. In conversation people use -yap instead: qurilyapti (is being built). -ilmoqda sounds like the news.

Naming the doer. To say who does it, add tomonidan: Loyiha xorijiy kompaniya tomonidan amalga oshirilmoqda (The project is being carried out by a foreign company).

Watch out. Some verbs ending in -lan look passive but mean doing something to or for oneself: Talabalar imtihonga tayyorlanmoqda means the students are preparing for the exam.

    In a verb pair, only the last verb becomes passive.

  5. Arizalar 1-iyungacha qabul qilinmoqda.

    Applications are being accepted until 1 June.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the active form for something that is being done.

    Yangi maktablar qurmoqda.
    Yangi maktablar qurilmoqda.

    Qurmoqda means is building, so the schools would be doing the building. The schools receive the action, so the verb needs the passive -il-.

  • Adding -l after a stem that ends in la.

    Koʻchalar tozalalmoqda.
    Koʻchalar tozalanmoqda.

    After a stem ending in l or la, the passive is -in or -n, not -l.
