-(i)b chiqmoq

All the Way Through: -(i)b Chiqmoq

Level 4

Verb in -(i)b + chiqmoq = all the way through: oʻqib chiqdim (I read it through), tekshirib chiqing (check all of it).

How It Works

This is one of the helper verbs that follow a verb in -(i)b.

1. Building the form
Take the verb stem (the dictionary form without -moq) and add -ib after a consonant or -b after a vowel. Then add the helper verb, which carries the tense and the person:

  • oʻqi- → oʻqib chiqdim (I read it through)
  • tekshir- → tekshirib chiqing (check all of it)
  • aylan- → aylanib chiqdik (we went all around it)

2. Through a thing
oʻqib chiqmoq (to read through), tekshirib chiqmoq (to check through), yozib chiqmoq (to write out). koʻrib chiqmoq (to look through) is also the usual verb for reviewing a document or request: Direktor arizangizni koʻrib chiqadi (The director will review your application).

3. Through places
Butun shaharni aylanib chiqdik (We went all around the city).

4. Through a stretch of time
Kechasi bilan uxlamay chiqdim (I stayed awake the whole night), with the negative -may form; Kasalxonada bir hafta yotib chiqdi (He spent a whole week in hospital).

5. Literal going out
With motion, chiqmoq can simply mean going out, and the -(i)b verb says how: Bolalar hovliga yugurib chiqishdi (The children ran out into the yard). Context tells you which meaning you have.

6. chiqmoq or boʻlmoq?
-(i)b boʻlmoq says you have finished: oʻqib boʻldim (I’m done reading). oʻqib chiqdim stresses that you covered all of it. Because chiqmoq means the whole thing, it does not go with words like biroz (a little).

Examples (6)

  1. Bu kitobni ikki kunda oʻqib chiqdim.

I read this book from cover to cover in two days.

Word by Word: This book-(obj.) two day-in reading came-out-I.

  2. Roʻyxatni boshidan oxirigacha tekshirib chiqing.

Check the list from beginning to end.

    Word by Word: List-(obj.) beginning-its-from end-its-until checking come-out.

  3. Direktor arizangizni koʻrib chiqadi.

The director will review your application.

Word by Word: Director application-your-(obj.) seeing comes-out.

  4. Mehmonlar bilan butun shaharni aylanib chiqdik.

We went all around the city with our guests.

Word by Word: Guests with whole city-(obj.) going-around came-out-we.

  5. Imtihondan oldin kechasi bilan uxlamay chiqdim.

I stayed awake the whole night before the exam.

    Word by Word: Exam-from before night-its with not-sleeping came-out-I.

  6. Bolalar hovliga yugurib chiqishdi.

The children ran out into the yard.

Word by Word: Children yard-to running came-out.

Here chiqmoq keeps its literal meaning of going out.

Common Mistakes

  • Using chiqmoq for only part of something.

    Kitobni biroz oʻqib chiqdim.
    Kitobni biroz oʻqidim.

Intended: I read a little of the book. chiqmoq means all the way through, which clashes with biroz (a little). Use the plain verb.

  • Adding -b instead of -ib after a consonant.

    Hamma xonalarni aylanb chiqdik.
    Hamma xonalarni aylanib chiqdik.

aylan- ends in a consonant, so it takes -ib: aylanib. Only stems ending in a vowel take -b.
