hamma / barcha

All, Everyone

Level 2

Hamma means everyone or all: Hamma keldi (Everyone came). Barcha means all: barcha talabalar (all the students).

How It Works

Hamma and barcha both mean all.

On its own, hamma means everyone. Hamma keldi (Everyone came). Hamma shu yerda (Everyone is here). The verb stays singular, like English everyone is.

Before a noun. Both words usually go before a plural noun: hamma talabalar, barcha talabalar (all the students). Hamma also forms set phrases with a singular noun, such as hamma narsa (everything) and hamma vaqt (all the time). Barcha is a little more formal, so you see it often in writing, news and announcements.

With possessive endings. Add an ending to say all of us, all of you or all of it:

  • hammamiz / barchamiz: all of us. The verb uses we: Hammamiz keldik (All of us came).
  • hammangiz / barchangiz: all of you. Hammangizga rahmat! (Thank you all!)
  • hammasi / barchasi: all of it, all of them, everything. Hammasi yaxshi (Everything's fine).

These forms take case endings like any noun: hammasini (all of it, as an object), hammangizga (to all of you).

All vs every. Har means every and needs a singular noun: har talaba. Hamma and barcha talk about the whole group: hamma talabalar.

Writing. Hamma is written apart from the next word: hamma vaqt (all the time).

Common Mistakes

  • Using a he/she verb with hammamiz.

    Hammamiz keldi.
    Hammamiz keldik.

Hammamiz means all of us, so the verb needs the we ending: keldik.

  • Using bare hamma for all of it.

Hamma yedim. (meaning: I ate all of it)
    Hammasini yedim.

Hamma alone means everyone. For all of a thing, use hammasi, here with -ni as the object: hammasini.

  • Using har with a plural for all.

    Har talabalar shu yerda.
    Hamma talabalar shu yerda.

Har means every and takes a singular noun. For all the students, use hamma or barcha with the plural.
