Ask whether تک names a limit or an unexpected inclusion.

How It Works

Keep any required case marking: بچوں تک کو has plural oblique بچوں followed by تک and کو. The particle does not remove the recipient or experiencer relation.

A negative can make the unexpected minimum important: ایک لفظ تک نہیں کہا means that not even one word was said.

Context distinguishes this use from a boundary such as پانچ بجے تک. An item, rather than a time or distance limit, is being placed at the edge of expectation.

    The children are an unexpectedly included group.

  2. اس نے ایک لفظ تک نہیں کہا۔

    They did not say even one word.

    The negative excludes even a minimal amount of speech.

    This small village even has a bookshop.

    تک marks the bookshop as a surprising inclusion.

  4. وہ اپنا نام تک بھول گیا۔

    He even forgot his own name.

    The focus is an unexpectedly basic thing to forget.
