з-поміж + Genitive
Selection from Within a Set
The preposition з-поміж (from among) is used to highlight one or more items being chosen or emerging from a larger set. It is more precise than the general 'among' and is always written with a hyphen.
How It Works
1. Meaning and Usage
з-поміж is a secondary preposition that functions as a specialized tool for selection. It is most commonly used with verbs of:
- Choosing: вибирати (to choose), обирати (to elect).
- Distinction: вирізняти (to distinguish), виділяти (to highlight).
- Emergence: з’являтися (to appear), виходити (to come out).
2. Case Requirement
This preposition exclusively governs the Genitive case. Even though the base word між usually takes the Instrumental, the prefix з- forces the Genitive.
3. Orthography: The Hyphen Rule
According to Ukrainian orthographic rules, all compound prepositions starting with the prefix з- or із- (such as з-поміж, з-під, з-над) must be written with a hyphen.
4. Euphonic Variants
To maintain euphony and avoid difficult consonant clusters, two variants are used:
- з-поміж (standard)
- із-поміж (used after consonants or at the start of a sentence to improve flow)
Note that unlike the simple preposition з, this compound form does not have a 'зі-' variant in standard literary Ukrainian.
5. Register
While perfectly standard, з-поміж carries a slightly more formal or literary tone. In casual speech, Ukrainians might use з or серед, but з-поміж is the precise choice for academic, journalistic, or poetic contexts to become proficient in nuanced expression.
