най-
Superlative with Най-
Adjective → Comparative (+іший/-ший) → Superlative (най- + comparative).
How It Works
The superlative degree (найвищий ступінь) indicates that a quality is present in the highest possible amount compared to all others.
1. The Two-Step Formation:
To form the superlative, you must first know the suffixal comparative form. The prefix най- is then attached to that form:
- Positive: теплий (warm)
- Comparative: тепліший (warmer)
- Superlative: найтепліший (warmest)
2. Irregular and Suppletive Forms:
If an adjective has an irregular comparative, the superlative follows that irregularity:
- великий (big) → більший (bigger) → найбільший (biggest)
- гарний (good/pretty) → кращий (better) → найкращий (best)
3. Intensification:
To add emphasis (like 'the very best' or 'as ... as possible'), you can add the prefixes як- or що- before най-:
- якнайшвидше (as fast as possible)
- щонайкращий (the very best)
4. Agreement:
Superlative adjectives must agree with the noun they modify in gender, number, and case, just like any other adjective.
Examples (5)
- Говерла — найвища гора в Україні.
Hoverla is the highest mountain in Ukraine.
Word by Word: Hoverla [is] the-highest mountain in Ukraine.
The prefix най- is attached to the comparative 'вища' (higher) to form 'найвища' (highest).
- Він мій найкращий друг.
He is my best friend.
Word by Word: He [is] my the-best friend.
The superlative 'найкращий' is formed from the irregular comparative 'кращий' (better).
- Це найцікавіша книжка, яку я читав.
This is the most interesting book I have read.
Word by Word: This [is] the-most-interesting book, which I read.
Even long adjectives like 'цікавий' (interesting) use the най- prefix in standard Ukrainian.
- Будь ласка, приходь якнайшвидше.
Please, come as quickly as possible.
Word by Word: Please, come as-quickly-as-possible.
The prefix як- is added to the superlative adverb 'найшвидше' to intensify the meaning.
- Київ — найбільше місто в країні.
Kyiv is the largest city in the country.
Word by Word: Kyiv [is] the-largest city in country.
The superlative 'найбільше' agrees with the neuter noun 'місто'.
Common Mistakes
Using the Russian-style 'самий' instead of the prefix 'най-'.
Він самий кращий учень.Він найкращий учень.In standard Ukrainian, 'самий' is not used to form superlatives. You must use the prefix 'най-' attached to the comparative form.
Attaching 'най-' to the base adjective instead of the comparative form.
Це найдобрий чоловік.Це найдобріший чоловік.The prefix 'най-' must be attached to the comparative form (добріший), not the base form (добрий).
Combining the analytic 'найбільш' with the synthetic 'най-' prefix.
Це найбільш найкращий фільм.Це найкращий фільм.You should use either the synthetic form (найкращий) or the analytic form (найбільш хороший), but never both at once.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To form the superlative degree using the prefix 'най-', you first need to understand how to form the comparative degree (using suffixes like -ш- or -іш-), as the superlative is simply the comparative form with a prefix added. Additionally, since superlatives are adjectives, you must be familiar with noun genders and basic nominative case agreement to use them correctly in a sentence.
- -ш-/-іш-Suffixal Comparative
The superlative degree in Ukrainian is built by adding the prefix най- to the existing comparative form of the adjective.
