yie

Well: Yie

Level 2

yie = well, at the end: Ɔkasa Twi yie. (She speaks Twi well.) Da yie! (Good night!)

How It Works

1. How something is done
Yie says an action is done well. It comes after the verb and any object: Ɔkasa Twi yie (She speaks Twi well), Wɔtoo dwom no yie (They sang the song well), Tie me yie (Listen to me carefully).

2. Wishes and goodbyes
With a command, yie makes a warm wish:

  • Da yie (sleep well): good night
  • Nante yie (walk well): goodbye, safe journey
  • Hwɛ wo ho so yie: take good care of yourself (see Myself, Yourself)

3. Things will be fine
Ɛbɛyɛ yie (It will be well) is a common comfort when someone is worried.

4. Yie, paa and pa
Add paa after yie for very well: Ɔkasa Twi yie paa (She speaks Twi very well). Yie describes an action. To call a thing good, use the adjective pa after a noun: adwuma pa (good work).

5. Spelling
Asante writing usually has yie. Akuapem writing, including the Akuapem Bible, has yiye: Monhwɛ yiye (Be careful, all of you). It is the same word.

6. In fixed phrases
Yie also appears in longer expressions, such as anyɛ yie koraa a (at the very least).

Examples (6)

  1. Ɔkasa Twi yie.

    She speaks Twi well.

Yie comes after the object Twi.

  2. Da yie!

A wish said to someone going to bed.

  3. Nante yie!

  4. Tie me yie.

    Listen to me carefully.

Word by Word: listen me well

  5. Wɔtoo dwom no yie.

    They sang the song well.

Word by Word: they-threw song the well

Too is the past of to before an object; to dwom means to sing.

  6. Ɛbɛyɛ yie.

    Word by Word: it-will-be well

    Said to comfort someone.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting yie between the verb and its object.

    Ɔkasa yie Twi.
    Ɔkasa Twi yie.

Yie comes after the object, at the end of the verb phrase.

  • Leaving out yie when you mean she speaks Twi very well.

    Ɔkasa Twi paa.
    Ɔkasa Twi yie paa.

Paa only makes something stronger; it does not mean well. Say yie first, then add paa.
