Tone Marks On Borrowed Words
The five examples contain borrowed words written with Thai tone marks. Read each spelling with the ordinary Thai consonant-class and tone-mark rules. A mark's name alone does not tell you the resulting tone.
How It Works
Three Marks In The Examples
เค้ก means cake, โน้ต appears in สมุดโน้ต for a notebook, and เชิ้ต appears in เสื้อเชิ้ต for a shirt. Each of these written words has ้, called mai tho. แก๊ส means gas and has ๊, called mai tri. แฟชั่น means fashion and has ่, called mai ek.
Use The Consonant Class
ค, น, ช and ฟ belong to the low class; ก belongs to the middle class. Under ordinary Thai tone calculation, low-class consonants with mai tho give a high tone, and low-class consonants with mai ek give a falling tone. Middle-class ก with mai tri gives a high tone. These are spelling-based tone rules; English stress is not a Thai tone mark.
Read The Sentence
The examples describe chocolate cake, a request to borrow a notebook, a white shirt, gas that has run out, and dressing according to fashion. The notebook request leaves its owner understood, so it does not explicitly say your notebook. เสื้อเชิ้ต forms one shirt expression rather than naming two separate shirts.
Choose The Written Form
For the notebook word in the exercise, choose สมุดโน้ต. The alternative สมุดโน๊ต changes mai tho to mai tri on น and does not give the standard spelling tested here. The sentence meanings otherwise stay the same; the exercise compares spelling.
Compare Related Lessons
The separate tone-rules, live-and-dead-syllable and consonant-class entries explain how Thai spelling is read. The separate English code-mixing entry discusses its own language-use contexts. Borrowing a word does not by itself show that every occurrence is a deliberate stylistic switch into English.
Examples (5)
- ฉันชอบกินเค้กช็อกโกแลต
I like eating chocolate cake.
Word by Word: I | like | eat | chocolate cake
เค้ก is the cake word in เค้กช็อกโกแลต, chocolate cake. Its written ้ is mai tho on low-class ค; the tone calculation follows that consonant class and mark.
- ขอยืมสมุดโน้ตหน่อยได้ไหม
Could I borrow a notebook?
Word by Word: request | borrow | notebook | softening particle | can | question particle
สมุดโน้ต means notebook, with ้ in โน้ต. หน่อย softens the request, and ได้ไหม asks whether borrowing is possible or allowed. The owner is not explicitly named.
- เขาใส่เสื้อเชิ้ตสีขาว
He is wearing a white shirt.
Word by Word: he | wear | shirt | color | white
เสื้อเชิ้ต is the shirt expression. เชิ้ต contains mai tho on low-class ช; this use of a mark does not replace the ordinary tone calculation. สีขาว identifies the color as white.
- ที่บ้านแก๊สหมดแล้ว
The gas at home has run out.
Word by Word: at | home | gas | run out | already
แก๊ส is gas and contains mai tri on middle-class ก. หมดแล้ว says that it has run out; the sentence does not specify a gas type.
- เธอชอบแต่งตัวตามแฟชั่น
She likes to dress according to fashion.
Word by Word: she | like | dress | follow | fashion
แฟชั่น means fashion. The final syllable ชั่น contains mai ek on low-class ช, giving a falling tone under the ordinary written rule.
Common Mistakes
Keep Mai Tho In โน้ต
ขอยืมสมุดโน๊ตหน่อยขอยืมสมุดโน้ตหน่อยFor the notebook word in this exercise, choose ขอยืมสมุดโน้ตหน่อย. โน้ต uses mai tho (้) on น. The alternative changes it to mai tri (๊), producing โน๊ต rather than the standard written form tested here. The task tests spelling, not an estimate of how frequently people make this error.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand how tone marks work on borrowed words, you first need a solid grasp of the standard Thai tone system, including consonant classes and the four tone marks. This pattern explains why certain words (like 'cake' or 'note') use tone marks that seem to break the normal rules of Thai script to better match the source language's sound.
- The Four Tone Marks
Understanding the standard four tone marks is essential before learning how they are applied irregularly to loanwords.
Foundations - How Tone Is Decided
Learners must understand the standard tone rules to recognize that loanwords often violate these rules to preserve original pronunciation.
Foundations - The Three Consonant Classes
Since tone rules are based on consonant classes, knowing these classes is necessary to identify when a loanword is using a tone mark 'incorrectly' according to standard Thai phonology.
