ถือว่า

Counts as

Level 3

ถือว่า presents something as considered, regarded, or counted a certain way. The judgment may come from a speaker or a stated rule; the wording alone does not prove consensus or objectivity.

How It Works

Read The Evaluation
ถือว่า presents how something is regarded, accepted, or counted. ถือว่าโชคดีมากที่ไม่มีใครบาดเจ็บ evaluates the absence of injury as lucky. ราคานี้ถือว่าไม่แพงเลย evaluates the price as not expensive. Neither sentence names an accident, a market survey, or a standard shared by everyone.

Read What Is Counted As A Result
เขาสอบผ่านแล้ว ถือว่าประสบความสำเร็จ presents passing the exam as a success. The expression gives that evaluation without establishing an agreed social status.

Read A Rule Statement Carefully
ถ้าคุณทำแบบนี้ ถือว่าผิดกฎหมาย says that doing this would be counted as illegal. It leaves the action and applicable law unstated, so the grammar example cannot verify the legal claim. The dictionary’s separate legal noun sense does not turn every ordinary use of ถือว่า into a conclusive legal presumption.

Read The Offer
ครั้งนี้ถือว่าฉันเลี้ยงนะ is presented here as ‘This time, consider it my treat.’ The offer concerns this occasion, rather than a universal classification rule.

Keep The Take-Offense Expression Distinct
อย่าถือสาเขาเลย asks the listener not to take offense or hold something against him. ถือสา is a separate word; replacing it with ถือว่า does not reproduce this complete idiom. Compare คิดว่า and other expressions through their own full examples rather than dividing all judgments into ‘objective’ and ‘personal’ classes.

Common Mistakes

  • Use ถือสา For This Take-Offense Expression

    อย่าถือว่าเขาเลย
    อย่าถือสาเขาเลย

The task asks for อย่าถือสาเขาเลย, meaning do not take offense or hold it against him. อย่าถือว่าเขาเลย does not reproduce that complete idiom. Read ถือสา as a whole word rather than replacing it with ถือว่า.
