komma att
Will (Prediction)
Use kommer att + infinitive verb to make predictions about the future.
How It Works
Komma att is one of the primary ways to express the future tense in Swedish, equivalent to "will" or "is going to" when making a prediction.
Structure:
A basic statement has Subject + kommer (att) + infinitive. Other clause patterns change the order: I morgon kommer hon att resa or Kommer hon att resa?.
The verb kommer does not change regardless of the subject.
- Jag kommer att resa. (I will travel.)
- De kommer att se. (They will see.)
Usage - Predictions and Consequences:Komma att is used when you are predicting something will happen or stating a logical consequence. The speaker presents the event as expected. The grounds for that expectation can include someone's plans or decisions.
- Prediction: Solen kommer att gå ner klockan åtta. (The sun will set at eight o'clock.)
- Consequence: Om tåget är försenat kommer vi att missa anslutningen. (If the train is delayed, we will miss the connection.)
Komma att vs. Ska:
This is a crucial distinction for learners.
- Use komma att for predictions, including predictions about voluntary actions.
- Use ska for intentions, plans, or promises. These are common uses of
ska; it can also report an expectation based on what others say.
Compare:
- Det kommer att bli kallt. (It's going to get cold. - A prediction about the weather.)
- Jag ska ta på mig en jacka. (I'm going to put on a jacket. - My intention/plan.)
Both Det kommer att bli kallt and Det kommer bli kallt occur in contemporary Swedish, including writing. Keeping att is a clear conventional option, but its omission is not confined to very informal speech.
Meaning and Usage ContrastJag kommer att gå på bio ikväll. / Jag ska gå på bio ikväll.
Both sentences are grammatical. Jag ska gå på bio straightforwardly presents a plan; Jag kommer att gå på bio predicts that the visit will happen. A voluntary planned action is not excluded from kommer att.
