Swedish pitch accent
Many varieties distinguish Accent 1 and Accent 2. The pitch pattern varies by dialect, and most Finland Swedish does not use this contrast.
How It Works
Two Categories, Different Regional Sounds
Many Swedish varieties distinguish Accent 1 (acute) and Accent 2 (grave). Some central Swedish pronunciations show a one-peak versus two-peak contrast when the word is prominent, but other varieties distinguish the accents mainly by when the pitch movement occurs. Sentence emphasis also affects the contour. Do not treat a drawn melody as universal Swedish.
Words And Word Forms
In varieties with the contrast, anden can be the duck (Accent 1) or the spirit (Accent 2), and tomten can be the plot of land or the gnome. The accent belongs to the spoken word form; spelling usually does not show it. Context also helps listeners identify the intended word.
Regional Scope
Most Finland Swedish lacks this tonal distinction, although a few dialects retain it. Swedish dialects can also assign different accents to the same word, including some loanwords and compounds. None of these regional patterns is an error.
Practice With A Consistent Model
Listen to whole words and short phrases from the variety you are learning. Distinguish word stress from pitch accent: stress identifies a prominent syllable, while the accent concerns the pitch pattern associated with the word. Adding an ending can affect accent, so check the full form rather than memorizing one immutable accent for the root.

Related Patterns
- Stress patterns
Word stress and pitch accent interact but are distinct. First identify the stressed syllable, then listen to the full accent contour in the variety you are learning.
Foundations - Noun compounds
Compounds often have Accent 2 in central Swedish, but lexical and regional exceptions occur. The generalization is not a rule for every Swedish variety.
Level 3 - -en/-etDefinite Singular Suffix
The addition of suffixes like the definite singular suffix is where you'll often hear the accent pattern play out, as seen in examples like 'anden' and 'tomten'.
Level 1 - -or/-ar/-er/-nPlural Endings
Plural formation can affect word accent. For example, some forms change accent when an ending is added; check the full word form instead of assuming the root’s accent never changes.
