Noun compounds

Level 3

Swedish frequently combines words to create new nouns. The last word is the main noun, and the first word describes it. For example, fot (foot) + boll (ball) becomes fotboll (football).

How It Works

Compound nouns are a fundamental feature of Swedish. Unlike English, which often uses spaces between such words (e.g., 'bus stop'), Swedish almost always joins them into one word.

Basic Structure: Modifier + Head
The most common pattern is combining two nouns. The second noun is the main word (head), and the first noun modifies it.

  • en bil (a car) + en nyckel (a key) → en bilnyckel (a car key)
  • ett hus (a house) + en dörr (a door) → en husdörr (a house door)

Gender and Number
In the ordinary pattern, the head determines gender and inflection. A few established words have exceptional properties, so a dictionary remains useful.

  • en bok (a book, en-word) + en hylla (a shelf, en-word) → en bokhylla (a bookshelf, en-word)
  • The definite form is bokhyllan, not bokenhyllan.
  • The plural form is bokhyllor, not böckerhyllor.

Linking Elements
Sometimes, a linking sound is needed between the parts of the compound. The most common is -s-.

  • ett kök + ett bord → ett köksbord (a kitchen table)
  • en stad + ett hus → ett stadshus (a city hall)

Other linking vowels like -e-, -o-, or -u- exist but are less common (gata → gatukök).

Other Word Types in Compounds
Nouns can also be combined with other types of words:

  • Verb Stem + Noun: skriva (to write) + ett bord (a table) → ett skrivbord (a desk)
  • Adjective + Noun: grön (green) + en sak (a thing) → en grönsak (a vegetable)

Stress
In most compound nouns, the primary stress falls on the first part of the word: FOTboll, BILnyckel.

The linking form is partly conventional: learn köksbord, gatukök and ålderdomshem as words rather than adding a sound whenever it feels easier to pronounce. Compound stress normally includes strong secondary stress in the final component as well as primary stress in the first. Derivation with a suffix, such as ålder + -dom, is a different word-building process.

Examples (5)

  1. en fot + en boll → en fotboll

    a foot + a ball → a football

Two en-words combine. The new word, fotboll, is also an en-word because the last part, boll, is an en-word.

  2. ett kök + ett bord → ett köksbord

    a kitchen + a table → a kitchen table

This example shows the use of the linking letter -s- between the two nouns. The gender is determined by bord (ett-word).

  3. Jag behöver ett nytt skrivbord.

    I need a new desk.

Word by Word: I need a new write-table.

Here, the verb stem skriv- (from skriva, to write) is combined with the noun bord (table).

  4. Ska vi gå till busshållplatsen?

Shall we go to the bus stop?

Word by Word: Shall we go to the-bus-hold-place?

The structure is buss + hållplats (bus + stop). Hållplats itself contains håll- and plats. The definite suffix -en belongs at the end of the whole compound.

  5. Min mormor bor i ett ålderdomshem.

My grandmother lives in a retirement home.

Word by Word: My mother’s-mother lives in an old-age-home.

Ålderdomshem consists of ålderdom (old age), linking -s-, and hem (home). Ålderdom is a derivation with the suffix -dom, not a compound of two independent words.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing compound nouns as separate words, like in English.

Jag såg en sjuk sköterska på sjukhuset.
Jag såg en sjuksköterska på sjukhuset.

For the profession, write sjuksköterska as one word. Sjuk sköterska is grammatical but means a nurse who is ill. Most ordinary compounds are joined without spaces; special spellings such as EU-land use a hyphen.

  • Applying the definite article or plural ending to the first part of the compound.

    Jag ställde bilen i bilengaraget.
    Jag ställde bilen i bilgaraget.

In bilgaraget, the definite suffix -et belongs to the compound’s final component. Do not insert the definite bil-en as the first component. This does not mean every first component is unchanged: many use a linking -s-, a different vowel or another established stem form.

Learn This First

To learn Swedish compound nouns, you must first understand how nouns function individually. Since compounds are written as a single word, the gender and inflection of the whole word are dictated by the last element. Additionally, you need to know how nouns change form when they act as the first part of a compound, which often involves plural stems or linking 's' sounds.
