Register differences
Distinguish spoken versus written medium from formal versus informal register. Choose clear wording for the situation; regional pronunciation and stylistic choices are not grammar errors.
How It Works
Vocabulary And RegisterErhålla, icke, ty, eljest, and emedan occur in more formal or older styles. Everyday få, inte, för, annars, and eftersom are also useful in modern writing. Emedan means because/since, not the contrasting “whereas”. Replacing every common word with an elevated synonym does not automatically improve precision.
Pronunciation And Spelling
Many speakers pronounce both de and dem as dom; pronunciation varies regionally. This merger is not simply a contraction. Standard edited prose normally distinguishes subject de and object dem, while dom occurs in informal writing and representations of speech. Reduced pronunciations may be represented as ere for är det or ja e for jag är, but such spellings are informal approximations, not instructions to write all speech this way.
Sentence Structure
Conversation can rely on shared surroundings, responses, restarts, and omitted material. Edited prose often needs to make connections explicit. Both media use subordinate clauses and ordinary Swedish word-order patterns, including the BIFF pattern. Clear writing often benefits from short sentences and explicit verbs. Both s-passives and bli-passives occur in speech and writing; choose according to meaning and information structure, not a rule that one medium excludes a form.
Small Words
Ju, väl, and nog can convey shared assumptions, uncertainty, or probability in writing as well as conversation. Liksom, typ, alltså, and ba have conversational uses, but their functions differ. For example, alltså can express a conclusion rather than fill a pause. Do not delete a word before considering the meaning it contributes.
Nouns And Verbs
Nominal style packages processes as nouns, while verbal style presents actions through verbs. Regeringens förslag fick kritik and Folk kritiserade förslaget som regeringen kom med can both occur in speech or writing. The second explicitly names critics as people; the two are not merely interchangeable labels for different media.
Compare Without Calling A Style WrongJag ämnar nu att förtära min lunch can sound ceremonious or humorous where Nu ska jag äta lunch is neutral. This is a register contrast, not proof that the first sentence is ungrammatical. An essay may use active first-person wording such as I den här uppsatsen undersöker vi hur de löste problemet; academic writing does not require an impersonal passive.
Examples (6)
- Skrift: De erhöll icke den information de begärde.
Written: They did not receive the information they requested.
Word by Word: Written: They received not the information they requested.
This sentence uses formal vocabulary ('erhöll', 'icke', 'begärde') and the correct written pronouns 'de'.
- Tal: Dom fick inte den informationen dom bad om.
Spoken: They didn't get the info they asked for.
Word by Word: Spoken: They got not the information they asked for.
This is the spoken equivalent. 'dom' replaces 'de/dem', and simpler, more common verbs ('fick', 'bad om') are used.
- Skrift: En undersökning av orsakerna till olyckan kommer att genomföras.
Written: An investigation of the causes of the accident will be carried out.
Word by Word: Written: An investigation of the causes to the accident will be carried out.
This demonstrates a nominal style ('en undersökning av orsakerna') and passive voice, common in formal, written contexts.
- Tal: Man kommer att undersöka varför olyckan hände.
Spoken: They/One will investigate why the accident happened.
Word by Word: Spoken: One will investigate why the accident happened.
The verbal construction
undersöka varförand impersonalmanare also suitable in writing. The label Tal illustrates a possible spoken version rather than an exclusive rule. - Skrift: Beslut fattades av styrelsen, varefter protokollet justerades.
Written: A decision was made by the board, after which the minutes were checked and certified.
Word by Word: Written: Decision was-made by the board, whereafter the minutes were-checked-and-certified.
In meeting procedure,
justera protokolletmeans check the accuracy of the minutes and certify them, normally with a signature. It is more specific than simply adjusting a document. - Tal: Styrelsen tog ett beslut, och sen fixade dom protokollet.
Spoken: The board made a decision, and then they fixed the minutes.
Word by Word: Spoken: The board took a decision, and then fixed they the minutes.
This informal sentence uses active voice,
och sen, dom, and broadfixade. It says they dealt with or fixed the minutes, but does not specify the formal checking and certification conveyed byjusterades; it is not an exact semantic equivalent.

Related Patterns
- Academic/legal register
This pattern details the specific features of the formal register, which is a key component of 'written' Swedish as discussed here.
Level 6 - Colloquial features
Conversation often includes reductions and interactional particles. These features can also be represented in writing; register and medium should be distinguished.
Level 6 - Nominal vs verbal style
Nominal style (using nouns instead of verbs) is a very common characteristic of formal written Swedish, contrasting with the more direct verbal style of spoken language.
Level 5 - Verbal vs nominal style
Clear verbal formulations are useful in writing as well as speech. Use them when they make actions and participants easier to follow.
Level 5 - -s (passiv)-s Passive Voice
S-passives and bli-passives occur in both speech and writing. Their choice also depends on verb, aspect, and information structure, not just register.
Level 3 - juYou Know/indeed
Ju marks information presented as shared or available to the listener or reader. It occurs in writing too; its contribution is not merely conversational filler.
