-vis

Adverb Suffix

Level 5

The suffix -vis is attached to nouns or adjectives to create adverbs. It's similar to adding '-wise' or '-ly' in English.

How It Works

The -vis suffix is a versatile tool for creating adverbs in Swedish. It can be attached to both nouns and adjectives, but the resulting meaning and function differ slightly.

1. From Nouns
When added to a noun stem, -vis creates an adverb describing how something is done or arranged. The meaning is often 'by' or 'in terms of' the noun.

  • steg (step) → stegvis (step by step, gradually)
  • bit (piece) → bitvis (in pieces, intermittently)
  • par (pair) → parvis (in pairs)
  • del (part) → delvis (partly)
  • förhoppning (hope) → förhoppningsvis (hopefully)

These words can describe arrangement, extent, or manner. Förhoppningsvis instead expresses the speaker's hope about the situation; a noun base does not guarantee a manner meaning.

2. From Adjectives
When added to the neuter singular form of an adjective, -vis typically forms a sentence adverb (satsadverbial). Unlike regular adverbs that modify a verb or adjective, these comment on the entire sentence, expressing the speaker's attitude or assessment.

  • lycklig (happy) → lyckligtvis (fortunately, luckily)
  • naturlig (natural) → naturligtvis (naturally, of course)
  • möjlig (possible) → möjligtvis (possibly)

Key Distinction: -vis vs. -t Adverbs
This is a crucial point for advanced learners. Many adjectives have an adverbial use in their neuter -t form. Compare the meanings of individual words rather than assuming that the ending alone determines their function: stegvis describes manner, while a -t form such as säkert can express the speaker's assessment.

  • -t adverb (manner): Modifies the verb. Describes how an action is performed.
Example: Hon sjöng vackert. (She sang beautifully.) - 'beautifully' describes the singing.
  • -vis adverb (sentential): Modifies the whole sentence. Expresses an opinion about the fact stated.
Example: Lyckligtvis kom han i tid. (Fortunately, he arrived on time.) - 'fortunately' comments on the fact that he arrived on time.

Sentence adverbs such as lyckligtvis often stand in the middle of the clause, but can also come first: Lyckligtvis kom han i tid. The finite verb then precedes the subject. Manner and extent adverbs such as stegvis and bitvis have their own placement possibilities; not every -vis word is a sentence adverb.

Meaning and Usage Contrast
Han log lyckligtvis mot mig. / Han log lyckligt mot mig.
Lyckligtvis means 'fortunately' and comments on the whole sentence (e.g., 'Fortunately, he smiled at me'). To say he smiled 'happily' (describing the manner of his smile), you must use the standard adverb form lyckligt.

Examples (5)

  1. Lyckligtvis hann vi med det sista tåget.

Fortunately, we caught the last train.

Word by Word: Luckily caught we with the last train.

Lyckligtvis is formed from the adjective lycklig (happy/lucky) and functions as a sentence adverb, commenting on the entire situation.

  2. Vi måste gå framåt stegvis för att inte göra misstag.

We have to proceed step by step so as not to make mistakes.

Word by Word: We must go forward step-wise for to not make mistakes.

Stegvis is formed from the noun steg (step) and describes the manner of proceeding.

  3. Naturligtvis vill jag hjälpa till.

Of course I want to help.

Word by Word: Naturally want I help to.

Naturligtvis (from naturlig, natural) is a very common sentence adverb expressing that something is obvious or expected.

  4. Vägen var bitvis väldigt isig.

The road was very icy in parts.

Word by Word: The road was piece-wise very icy.

Bitvis (from bit, piece/bit) means that the quality (being icy) occurred intermittently, not continuously.

  5. Eleverna arbetade parvis med projektet.

The students worked in pairs on the project.

Word by Word: The students worked pair-wise with the project.

Parvis (from par, pair) describes the arrangement or grouping of the students.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding plural agreement to a sentence adverb.

    Naturligtvisa kommer de i morgon.
    Naturligtvis kommer de i morgon.

Naturligtvis is an invariable sentence adverb. Do not add adjective plural -a to match de.
