nämligen

Namely/you See

Level 3

Use 'nämligen' to introduce an explanation or a reason for something you just said. It's like saying 'you see' or 'namely'.

How It Works

'Nämligen' is a versatile adverb that serves two primary functions:

1. Providing a Reason or Cause
This is its most common use. It introduces a new main clause that explains the 'why' behind the previous statement. In this sense, it's similar to 'för' (for/because), but the grammatical structure differs: nämligen is an adverb, while för can connect the clauses as a conjunction.

  • Jag kan inte komma ikväll. Jag måste nämligen jobba. (I can't come tonight. You see, I have to work.)

2. Providing a Specification or Clarification
In this use, 'nämligen' is equivalent to the English 'namely' or 'specifically'. It's used to list or specify what was mentioned in a general sense in the first part of the sentence.

  • Jag gillar tre färger, nämligen blå, grön och röd. (I like three colors, namely blue, green, and red.)

Sentence Position
As a sentence adverb, 'nämligen' follows the rules of main clause word order. It typically comes after the finite verb. As an explanatory clause adverbial it does not normally stand as the first constituent before an inverted verb. This is a syntactic restriction, not a ban on every capitalized Nämligen at the start of a separately punctuated clarification.

Explanation And Evidence
The second statement may supply evidence rather than a physical cause: Han är nog hemma. Det lyser nämligen i hans fönster. The light is evidence that he is home, not necessarily what caused him to be there.

Nämligen can occur within a subordinate clause too: Eftersom hon nämligen inte hade några pengar, kunde hon inte gå på bio. A compact specification such as Jag saknar en sak: nämligen tid names what is missing. Clause position, discourse connection and punctuation are separate choices.

Examples (5)

  1. Jag är jättetrött idag. Jag sov nämligen bara fyra timmar i natt.

I'm really tired today. You see, I only slept for four hours last night.

Word by Word: I am very-tired today. I slept namely only four hours in night.

Here, 'nämligen' introduces the reason for being tired.

  2. Vi måste skynda oss. Tåget går nämligen om tio minuter.

We have to hurry. The train leaves in ten minutes, you see.

Word by Word: We must hurry us. The-train goes namely in ten minutes.

  3. Han har två husdjur, nämligen en katt och en hund.

He has two pets, namely a cat and a dog.

Word by Word: He has two pets, namely a cat and a dog.

In this case, 'nämligen' specifies which pets he has.

  4. Hon tackade nej till jobbet. Lönen var nämligen för låg.

She turned down the job. The salary was too low, you see.

Word by Word: She thanked no to the-job. The-salary was namely too low.

  5. Bara en person kan lösa problemet, nämligen du.

Only one person can solve the problem, namely you.

Word by Word: Only one person can solve the-problem, namely you.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating explanatory nämligen as a clause-initial conjunction.

Nämligen jag var sjuk, så jag stannade hemma.
Jag stannade hemma. Jag var nämligen sjuk.

For the explanatory clause taught here, say Jag var nämligen sjuk. Nämligen is not a substitute for a clause-introducing eftersom. A separately punctuated specifying phrase can begin with Nämligen; do not turn the clause-position model into a spelling-based rule.

  • Confusing it with 'därför att' (because).

Jag är glad nämligen solen skiner.
Jag är glad. Solen skiner nämligen. / Jag är glad, därför att solen skiner.

Use nämligen inside the explanatory clause: Jag är glad; solen skiner nämligen. The two clauses may be in the same written sentence. Därför att can introduce a causal clause, so it follows a different construction; the distinction is not one written sentence versus two.
