därför att

Because

Level 2

därför att means 'because' and introduces the reason for an action or situation.

How It Works

därför att is used to answer the question 'varför?' (why?). The structure is typically: [Main Clause] + därför att + [Subordinate Clause].

The most important thing to remember is the word order in the subordinate clause that follows därför att. In the ordinary subordinate pattern, it follows the BIFF rule. This means that sentence adverbs (like inte, alltid, kanske) are placed before the finite verb.

Example:
Jag kan inte komma på festen därför att jag inte mår bra.
(I can't come to the party because I do not feel well.)

Notice how inte comes before the verb mår.

därför att vs. för
Another word for 'because' is för. However, för is a coordinating conjunction, which means it connects two main clauses. The clause after för has standard main clause word order (verb in second place). Both constructions are useful; choose the form and word order that fit the intended connection.

  • därför att (subordinate): Jag äter därför att jag är hungrig.
  • för (coordinate): Jag äter, för jag är hungrig.

The word order is the same here, but with inte the difference is clear:

  • därför att: Jag äter inte därför att jag inte är hungrig. (BIFF rule)
  • för: Jag äter inte, för jag är inte hungrig. (Main clause word order)

Meaning And Context
In speech and informal writing, därför att can introduce an asserted clause with main-clause order, much like för. Therefore Jag kommer inte därför att jag har inte tid should not be marked impossible solely for har inte; jag inte har tid is the ordinary subordinate model taught here.

Negation can also affect the interpretation: Jag äter inte därför att jag inte är hungrig may deny eating, or in suitable context reject a particular reason for eating. Make the intended connection clear in context. Därför att often supplies new explanatory information, while eftersom often provides a background reason; these are usage tendencies rather than an absolute known/unknown division.

Examples (4)

  1. Jag lär mig svenska därför att jag vill bo i Sverige.

I'm learning Swedish because I want to live in Sweden.

Word by Word: I learn me Swedish because that I want live in Sweden.

  2. Vi stannade inne därför att det regnade.

We stayed inside because it was raining.

Word by Word: We stayed inside because that it rained.

  3. Hon är trött därför att hon inte sov i natt.

She is tired because she didn't sleep last night.

Word by Word: She is tired because that she not slept in night.

Notice the word order in the subordinate clause: 'hon inte sov'. The adverb 'inte' comes before the verb 'sov', following the BIFF rule.

  4. Barnen skrattar därför att clownen är rolig.

The children are laughing because the clown is funny.

Word by Word: The children laugh because that the clown is funny.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing 'därför att' (because) with 'därför' (therefore).

Det var kallt, därför att jag tog på mig en jacka. (Intended: It was cold, so I put on a jacket.)
Det var kallt, därför tog jag på mig en jacka.

For the intended result, use därför followed by ordinary declarative V2: därför tog jag på mig en jacka. Därför att means because and reverses the stated reason/result relation here; the original sentence is not inherently ungrammatical. To state cold as the reason, say Jag tog på mig en jacka därför att det var kallt.

Learn This First

To use "därför att" correctly, you need to understand how Swedish subordinate clauses are structured, as the word order (especially the placement of sentence particles like "inte") differs from main clauses. It is also helpful to understand its relationship to the question word "varför" and the simpler conjunction "för".
