Go and/sit and construction
Link verbs with och in a close construction: sitta och läsa describes reading while seated; gå och handla can involve going somewhere to shop. The first verb frames the action, with different meanings in different constructions.
How It Works
Pseudo-coordination is a common construction in Swedish where two verbs are joined by och, and the first verb helps frame the second. Its meaning may be weakened, but need not disappear. Some constructions describe an ongoing activity; others include movement to a place or the start of an action.
Structure:
The basic structure is Verb 1 + och + Verb 2. In the basic patterns here, the two verbs have matching forms: present, preterite, supine, infinitive, or imperative.
Common First Verbs (Verb 1):
- Posture verbs: sitta (sit), stå (stand), ligga (lie down). These are the most frequent.
- Motion verbs: gå (go/walk), springa (run), åka (go/travel).
- Other verbs: ta (take), sätta sig (sit down).
Ta och...often marks getting started or a spontaneous decision. In an instruction it can sound encouraging or impatient; it is not inherently polite.
Tense Agreement:
The verbs match in the examples below. After har both are supines, and after ska both are infinitives; these are forms, not separate perfect or future inflections on each verb.
- Present: Hon sitter och skriver ett brev. (She is sitting and writing a letter.)
- Past (Preterite): Hon satt och skrev ett brev. (She was sitting and writing a letter.)
- Perfect: Hon har suttit och skrivit ett brev. (She has been sitting and writing a letter.)
- Future: Hon ska sitta och skriva ett brev. (She will sit and write a letter.)
Distinction from True Coordination:
Ordinary coordination presents actions with greater independence; they need not be sequential. The boundary with pseudo-coordination is gradual. Compare these useful readings:
- Pseudo-coordination: Han stod och väntade på bussen. (He was standing and waiting for the bus. - One continuous action).
- True Coordination: Han stannade och väntade på bussen. (He stopped and waited for the bus. - Two sequential actions).
This construction is very frequent in spoken and informal Swedish and makes the language sound more natural. It often corresponds to the English present continuous (-ing form) when used with posture verbs.
Placement Within the Construction
The words do not have to be adjacent: Nu sitter hon inte och läser places the subject and negation after the first finite verb. In Hon satt tyst och läste en bok, tyst follows satt, so it is not before the whole verb phrase. Adverb position depends on its function and scope; avoid a blanket rule about all adverbs after och.
Examples (5)
- Vi satt och pratade i timmar.
We sat talking for hours.
Word by Word: We sat and talked for hours.
Here, 'satt' (sat) describes the posture during the main action of 'pratade' (talked). It's one continuous event.
- Barnen springer och leker i parken.
The children are running around playing in the park.
Word by Word: The children run and play in the park.
- Jag ska gå och köpa mjölk.
I'm going to go and buy milk.
Word by Word: I shall go and buy milk.
A very common construction to express a simple errand. 'gå och...' implies setting out to do something.
- Han ligger och sover på soffan.
He is lying on the sofa sleeping.
Word by Word: He lies and sleeps on the-sofa.
- Ta och hjälp mig med det här!
Why don’t you help me with this! / Get on with helping me with this!
Word by Word: Take and help me with this here!
Ta och...marks starting the action. Its tone can be encouraging, urging, or impatient depending on the conversation; it does not guarantee a softer or politer command, and it need not imply going anywhere.
Common Mistakes
Using different tenses for the two verbs.
Jag sitter och läste.Jag satt och läste. For the intended past reading activity, use both past forms:
satt och läste. Withhar, use both supines:har suttit och läst; withska, both infinitives:ska sitta och läsa.
How It Connects

Pseudo-coordination (e.g., 'sitter och läser') is a way to express ongoing or aspectual actions in Swedish. To understand it, you need to know how to use the conjunction 'och' to link verbs, be familiar with common position verbs that often start the construction, and ensure both verbs are correctly conjugated in the same tense.
- ochAnd
Pseudo-coordination is built using the conjunction 'och' to link two verbs that function together as a single aspectual unit.
Level 1 - ligga/stå/sittaPosition Verbs
This construction frequently uses position verbs (sitta, stå, ligga) as the first verb to indicate the physical posture of the subject while performing the main action.

Semantically similar. Both 'sitta och läsa' and 'hålla på att läsa' (to be in the middle of reading) can describe an ongoing, continuous action.
Level 4 - börja + InfinitiveStart -ing
Contrasts with pseudo-coordination. While 'sitta och läsa' describes a continuous state, 'börja läsa' (start to read) describes the beginning (inceptive aspect) of an action, showing how different verb constructions can modify the meaning of an action.
Level 4 - sluta + InfinitiveStop -ing
Provides another aspectual contrast. While 'sitta och läsa' describes a continuous action, 'sluta läsa' (stop reading) describes the end of an action, highlighting how different constructions frame an event's timeline.
