Anticipatory Det
Use det as a formal subject when the clause or infinitive phrase being evaluated follows later in the sentence.
How It Works
Swedish commonly uses a formal subject det when the content clause or infinitive phrase is postponed. The verb agrees with the clause structure, and a predicative adjective normally has its neuter form: Det är viktigt att vila.
This structure is extremely common, especially with expressions of opinion, necessity, or feeling.
Common Structures:
- With an infinitive phrase:
Det+är/var+ adjective +att+ infinitive verb.
Example: Det är roligt att sjunga. (It is fun to sing.)
Here, the logical subject isatt sjunga. - With an
att-clause:Det+är/var+ adjective +att+ clause.
Example: Det är viktigt att du vilar. (It is important that you rest.)
Here, the logical subject isatt du vilar. - With other verbs:
This pattern also works with verbs likekänns(feels),verkar(seems), andlåter(sounds).
Example: Det känns bra att vara här. (It feels good to be here.)
A clause can also stand first as the subject: Att du vilar är viktigt. It counts as one constituent, however many words it contains, and does not violate verb-second order. Which version fits best depends on the surrounding conversation. Det itself need not stand first: I dag är det viktigt att vila, Är det viktigt att vila?, and eftersom det är viktigt att vila show its position in other clause patterns.

How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand the anticipatory 'det', you first need to be comfortable with the basic 'it is' structure in Swedish. You also need to know how to form infinitive clauses using 'att' and understand that adjectives must take the neuter form to match the placeholder 'det'.
- det ärIt Is
The anticipatory 'det' construction is built upon the basic 'det är' (it is) structure, which provides the framework for the placeholder subject.
Level 2 - attTo (Infinitive Marker)
The anticipatory 'det' often points forward to an infinitive clause, which requires the infinitive marker 'att' (to).
Level 1 - Adjective agreement
In this construction, the adjective following 'det är' must be in the neuter form (ending in -t) to agree with the formal subject 'det'.
