jira / jirtaa

Saying Something Exists

Level 2

Full present forms include jiraa, jirtaa, and jiraan. Jira is a reduced form used in particular focus and relative constructions.

How It Works

Jir follows first-conjugation agreement. An unfocused subject takes full agreement in its normal pronoun frame. Subject focus selects general reduced jira or feminine singular jirta, without a repeating short subject pronoun.

In Sanduuqan qalin baa ku jira, qalin is focused and jira is reduced. Waxaa jirta dhibaato uses feminine reduced agreement. Biyuhu waxay ku jiraan baaldiga has an unfocused plural subject and full jiraan: biyo is grammatically plural.

A place may occur without a preposition in an existence construction. Ku is common for a container or delimited space. Compare yaallaa for situated objects and joogaa for living-being location. Certain final-focus frames allow agreement with the actual subject or the masculine waxa frame; that variation has a construction-specific scope.
