yaallaa / joogaa

Location of Things and People

Level 2

Joogaa means “is present/stays”; yaallaa means “lies/is situated.” English “is” can translate either.

How It Works

Joog follows regular first-conjugation agreement: joogaa for I/he and joogtaa for you singular/she. Yaallaa is irregular. Masculine third-person singular has yaallaa or yaal, feminine singular taallaa or taal, and plural yaallaan. The shorter singular forms are attested alternatives.

Joogaa normally locates living beings without a place preposition; company takes la. Yaallaa commonly takes ku for a position within a space but no preposition for a surface. A person can joogaa at school while a book yaallaa on a table. Feminine mindi selects taallaa in full agreement.

Joogaa also occurs with objects perceived as moving, including the sun. Yaallaa has no progressive forms. Jir can instead announce existence. These preferences guide predicate selection without imposing one translation on every English “is at.”
