sababtoo ah / waayo

Giving a Reason

Level 4

sababtoo ah and waayo mean “because/since.” The explanation contains its own sentence particle.

How It Works

The fuller sababta oo ah presents “the reason being”; sababtoo ah is also documented. Either precedes an ordinary main clause with waa, a focus construction, or negative ma as appropriate.

Waayo likewise connects main clauses and introduces an explanation. A noun predicate after waa needs no present copula. Verbal and adjectival predicates keep their ordinary constructions. An instruction supported by a reason retains its imperative or prohibitive form.

The supplied excerpts do not establish a categorical register ranking between these connectors. Purpose states an aim; inkastoo introduces a contrary circumstance. Neither has the same explanatory relation. These reason constructions should also be distinguished from causal subordinators that genuinely introduce dependent clauses.

Examples (4)

  1. Waxaan joogaa guriga sababtoo ah waan daallan ahay.

I am staying at home because I am tired.

The explanation retains its affirmative particle frame.

  2. Waxaan iibsaday buugga sababta oo ah waxaan rabaa in aan akhriyo.

I bought the book because I want to read it.

The reason is a main clause containing an embedded in-complement.

  3. Ha furin albaabka, waayo waa qabow.

Do not open the door, because it is cold.

A complete nominal reason supports the prohibition.

  4. Ma tagayo suuqa waayo ma haysto lacag.

I am not going to the market because I have no money.

Both clauses keep negative main-clause frames.
