s / z + Instrumental

Together with Someone

Level 2

S or z with the instrumental expresses accompaniment or a means.

How It Works

S or z with the instrumental expresses accompaniment or a means. Use s before voiceless consonants p, t, k, f, s, š, c, č, h, and z elsewhere. Slovenian normally includes s/z for an instrumental tool.

The sound rule applies to the next word: s prijateljem but z dobrim prijateljem. Instrumental accompaniment and means both use the preposition here. This differs from Croatian-style bare instrumental tool phrases.

Examples (3)

  1. Grem s prijateljem.

I am going with a friend.

  2. Govorim z Ano.

    I am speaking with Ana.

  3. Pišem s svinčnikom.

I am writing with a pencil.
