trije, tri, štirje, štiri
Counting Three and Four
Nominative masculine nouns use trije and štirje, whether they name people or things; tri and štiri occur with feminine and neuter nouns.
How It Works
Nominative masculine nouns use trije and štirje, whether they name people or things; tri and štiri occur with feminine and neuter nouns. These constructions use plural agreement rather than the dual.
Use trije avtomobili as well as trije prijatelji: the masculine distinction is not limited to people. Compare feminine tri knjige and neuter tri mesta. Masculine accusative forms have their own paradigm, so the nominative trije should not be pasted into every case.
